I would have thought adding it to personal possessions cover on the household insurance is a better option. After all, its already covered in the house. Its only when you take it outside of the house that it comes under personal possessionas.

    Seems reasonable to me.
I'm just getting some quotes together for my business use. They're quoting £132pa for three laptops valued at £1000, £600 and £600.
    Can I help?

Hi, thought this might be the best place to post this.

I want to have my laptop insured, but not just for the normal things like accidental damage but also for mechanical faliure or electrical problems so I have to assurance of getting it fixed without a big charge.

I did a search on here and a few said a company called compucover but after looking at them they wont cover for mechanical breakdowns nor will they insure a unit that is more than 3 months old.

Does anyone know of a cheap but good insurance company that will do this?

    Thank you :)

iwanttosavenotspend..don't waste your money.. when you can buy a new Dell for £300, it's not really worth it.

Yeah I thought that but I love my lappy (read baby) and I have loads of progams and info on there that I want and need to keep such as my uni work ect

I have found insurance for £100 for 3 years cover in some places but not sure if it covers for mechanical faliure.

Plus I dont always have £300 to spare for a new one there and then, so want to keep my bases open

how much is the laptop worth?
You could buy a copy of ghost for £30, and backup to DVD/CD (you should do this anyway if you have important data, an insurance company won't get it back for you if the laptop is nicked or the hd goes bang)

then put the £70 in an isa.

    Its worth £700

I do back up but if there was a mechanical faliure that happens before I have backed up again (knowing my luck it will happen at the end of a long essay) then I cannot retrive it.

With the power issue I am having at the minute it has made me realise that I need it and want that back up incase anything happens, regarding the power problem I have been quoted £150 to repair it, but if I had insurance, it wouldnt cost anything.

The failure aspect would be covered by an extended warrenty - these will often also cover AD claims but if they dont then your home insurance probably will.

I am not a personal fan of extended warrenties as if the HD dies and needs replacing or the whole unit is decided to be beyond economical repair then you lose all your data anyway.

Getting insurance wont get your data back if your hard drive packs up, or something goes seriously wrong. If you have important data, u need to back up onto another hard drive or cds/dvds, not just onto another folder on the same computer.

Personally I would only get insurance for theft and maybe accidental damage. then again, the laptop is an IBM so touchwood it works until its obselete:)

You said worth £700...is that the street price when you bought it (the one the insurance company uses to value it) or the adjusted price compared to new laptops now?

How have you arrived at this value?

It's a fair point. Unless you backup after every change - which is unrealistic - then you always lose new work added since the last backup. But is it really that bad? Could you not email valuable documents to a web based email address, so that a copy is stored on the server on the web?

You might want to post on the techie board. If someone else can fix the power supply problem then you can probably fix it yourself, with a bit of help. Damn sure it wouldn't cost £150 ... more like £30!
I have found insurance for £100 for 3 years cover in some places but not sure if it covers for mechanical faliure.

But if you saved the £100 then in three years time you would have enough money to buy a new laptop. Or you would have enough savings to pay for any repairs.

    Hiya

The value is just slightly less than what the cost value was, original cost would have been £850 had I not got a deal on it.So I allowed for slight depreaction (sp) although I must admit its priceless to me, I love it to peices (I swear I dont often fall for inanimate objects lol)

As for the power supply the power socket has come lose in the back and could either- just need re-soldering, or, need a new power connector, which I have bought just incase, or I may need a new mother board, but I am going to phone my dad tonight and see if he is able to do it. Also albertross I will PM you about it, you always come to my rescue :)

Yeah I see what you mean about the saving £100 but if something breaks down on it and it costs £100 to fix, I would rather pay that than get a whole new laptop after I have got mine set up just how I want it.

    Hi,

I have just been lucky enough to treat myself to a lovely new macbook from apple.

Now it is absoultely gorgeous, so i obviously want to safeguard its future, i have a 3 year warranty on it, me being a higher education student and all.

Where is the cheapest place to insure it against accidental damage, water damage and theft etc ?

I want it insured for my travels on the train etc, so please only constructive comments if you can help, I don't need any comments about backup, and oh just buy another one... etc.

    Thanks in anticipation

    Ian

Also can you get a minimum term less than 1 year?
I found these people: http://www.js-laptopinsurance.com/ can anyone do any better ?
