My complete home insurance is only £110 which includes £35,000 of items in my home and £8,000 out the home... of cause mastercare (part of the dixon group last time I looked so wouldnt touch) is probably a warrenty as well so will cover electrical/ mechanical failure which home insurance doesnt.... but with the sales of goods act you are "covered" for the reasonable life of an item for failure

my laptop insurance is due to be renewed by coverplan, but, i have since taken out household insurance - contents - would it be wise just to keep this and not renew the laptop insurance? im hopeless when it comes to things like this - the laptop has broken twice already since bought and been mended within a week with the coverplan - should i stick to what i know? is it worth it?

    thanks

Home insurance will not cover it for wear & tear/ breakdown only perils such as theft/ fire/ flood - if you have accidental damage cover (or a policy that includes this automatically on entertainment equipment) and personal possessions then it will be covered for these in and outside the home.

The advantage of an extended warranty is that it will cover breakdown and often also business use (which isnt normally covered by home insurance) - now if this is worth the extra is only a question you can answer

  • Youve got to weigh up the odds of it actually being damaged/breaking down.

If it were to break down, depending on the fault, most notebooks can cost more to repair than buy a new one, assuming it is not top of the range.

Hi, I know I've got a spanking new MacBook Pro laptop winging its way from California with a friend of mine (it is Christmas!) I want to get it insured as soon as possible... does anyone know of any good insurers who deal with laptop policies and will do 'all cover' for an expensive bit of kit I'm going to be taking out and about with me on a regular basis?

Maybe it's about finding the right home insurer to do this? I should also get my iPod and headphones insured and I don't know how to do this in the most secure and economical way.

    Cheers for any help.

I had trouble insuring my laptop thru my household insurance as it would not cover the laptop outside the house without a huge premium. I also found that even to cover it in the house, I had to add it as a high risk item and that also cost me a fair whack.

I searched around a bit and found this company

    http://www.cheaplaptopinsurance.co.uk

They gave me a choice of cover depending on my laptops value, covers damage, theft, accidental and water damage, extended warranty, and I can use the computer abroad as well.

    Can anyone beat that?
  • I've been looking in to Endsleigh's Laptop Insurance which offers an additional level of protection in that it covers accidental damage, accidental loss and theft out of the room.

However, I can't find out how Endsleigh calculates these claims. I'm weighing up whether this is worth it.

Do they calculate the market value of the laptop or use the original value?
Do they source the laptop or allow you to?
Will they replace with a similar spec or use the original/market value and purchase current spec?

Sorry for the questions but I'm a bit confused by their site which doesn't give out much!!

If its like a normal insurance company-

    Market Value
They will come up with a liability figure and wont go above this
They'd use the market value to replace it with, although with the increasing pace of computers it makes it practically impossible.
