    Hi.

I am going to purchase a
Acer Aspire 5920G Laptop from Currys. It costs £500 and they offer a "whatever happens" insurance policy. I believe it costs £7.99 a month and is indefinite. here is the blurb:

Just call one number. We'll come to you. We'll fix or replace it. No limits. No hidden costs.
If we can't fix the problem over the telephone we'll get someone to you within 2 working days who can usually fix the problem on the spot. For many small portable items, simply drop into your nearest store.
    • We'll fix or replace it. If we can't fix your product there and then, we will fix the problem within 21 days or give you a replacement.
    • No limits. No matter how many times it goes wrong, we'll be there to put it right.
    • No hidden costs. You won't pay a penny extra - labour, parts and general advice are included
What it doesn't cover is things like theft, loss, misuse etc... Do you guys think it is worth taking out?

Seems overpriced to me. You can get comprehensive laptop cover for less than £80, however, a lot of these theft cover policies dont cover warranty problems, if that is what you are after

  • Hi,

    Any advice would be appreciated.

One of my children stood on my laptop and broke the screen abd the machine now fails to boot up.

I called zurich to claim and they state I am not insured even though it happened in my own home as It wasn't listed seperately. They also stated I am not covered for camera's , portable toys, video cameras, phones ....

I have accidental contents insurance. Is this correct?
  • Hi guys, I am newbie but need some advice quick. I originally bought a laptop for £1400 almost exactly 3 years ago. A couple of weeks ago the laptop was damaged and the house insurance have agreed to cover it. However they have come out and offered me a laptop worth £500-600, is this normal. I thought they would replace to the value of your purchase? I have the receipt to prove its cost and everything that came with it?

All replies would be much appreciated!

    Cheers

They will replace it with a lap top that is equvilent spec, a lap top of circa £600 will often be sufficient to replace a lap top of £1400 from 3 years ago
  • Thanks mate, bit gutted now I thought they had to replace with cost of purchase :(:(!!!

    Thanks for the response though!

Unfortunately with computers the technology constantly increases and the cost reduces so they can put you back in the position you were before the claim by replacing with say a £600 lap top.

The replacers normally give you the option to pay extra to upgrade and you normally get the Insurers discount off the balance.

Obviously if you have an apple or high end brand they cannot expect to replace it with say an acer etc.

There are circumstances where you can insist on a cash settlement or use your own supplier

My old HP has just been killed with a drink spill.
IIRC it was about £1700 3 or 4 years ago, i don't think it'll be repairable.

Anyone got any experience of what I can expect from Aviva?

    Cheers

Oh, there's a single item limit of £1500 on the policy. Am I in deep doo - doo?
  • Hi

Im going to work abroad this year for 6 months and want to take my laptop with me . Can anyone give me an insurance company that will cover this? Mainly im just worried about Theft.

    Thank you

    Danielle
  • I'm trying to find cover for 23 days abroad for a laptop, just for theft. I don't need breakdown cover as it still under warranty. My Annual travel insurance doesn't cover that amount. I've tried several of the ones mentioned but its expensive for what I need
    Thanks
