    Your house insurance
  • Hi there

I need to cover a laptop for accidental damage and theft when going abroad. I will be away for 80 days roughly. Anyone know any good companies that will give me a good value for money deal?

    Thanks in advance

Try adding it to your contents insurance. It cost me less than £5 to add mine.
  • I have been in the position of having claimed for two laptops on two separate occasions and the excess was £100 and both were replaced with new laptop computers I am with Halifax home insurance
  • Thought i would pass on my experience.

I had a Macbook Pro (1 year old) and it was the top of the range costing me £1700. i have tesco contents insurance and payed a little extra for personal belongings insurance due to the price on my macbook.

4 weeks ago, at work my macbook fell of a lectern and caused some damage. Scratched lid, dint in base and i think the DVD drive was dead.

I called tesco and in a week i had my mac picked up, after 5 days i called up to find they could not fix my mac but would offer me £1650, after 3 days i got a comet card and bought the new top of the range macbook pro for £1700. the company (Evander) who looked at my laptop also has a hard drive recovery service so i got my 500gb hard drive back in a caddy for £30.

At then end of the day i pay for this insurance and yes i had to pay £100 excess, £50 extra of the same model and £30 for the hard drive but now i have the new macbook pro with a new 500GB hard drive and it all works.

Generally i had a good experience, having a laptop at a price most people would not spend made em think Tesco would try and offer me a low amount of money but they were great.

    Hi Boontech

Which Insurance do you have with Tescos? Is it their Finest and do you have accidental cover and/or personal possessions?

Just checking, because I'm changing my insurance over and need to make sure my Macbook is covered, as it's not currently!!

    Cheers

We don't have home contents insurance (I am not householder and she has still not got round to it), and looking for cover on PC which has just come out of 3 year warranty, and an Acer netbook which has 6 months left.

Are there any good companies I should go with? Possibly one where I can insure PC now and add Netbook on later?

So whats the best company to go with?
  • Hello

I hope this is the right thread to ask, I was carrying my laptop and dropped and the screen is cracked I have home contents insurance with Halifax and the policy says it cover accidental damage. So I think I can make a claim it also says the excess is £150. I have never needed to claim on home insurance before.

But when I looked for it I couldn't find the receipt for when I bought it, is this a problem? I also didn't keep the box etc as I live in a flat and don't have a lot of space or loft etc for storing

Will they just send a replacement or vouchers or will they collect the broken computer for repair or what.

Laptop is Macbook Pro 13" bought new 2 years ago
    thanks
  • Many laptop insurance sites ask you to enter the value of the laptop. I got a £1200 laptop for £900. It took months of searching and waiting to get that deal. If it was stolen i'd have to pay at least £1000 for an equivalent model. What sum should i enter as the value of the laptop when applying for insurance? Some companies state in their FAQ that you must enter the undiscounted value e.g. not a sale price. But other sites don't advise at all. I called insure and go and they first told me to enter the replacement cost e.g. £1200 but then later said that the maximum payout would be what i actually paid. So what's the answer? Confused
