  • I can't think of any physical laptop repair that will cost less than £100 quid. For example I looked at replacing a Toshiba keyboard that had wine spilt on it a few months ago (for an ex...). The keyboard itself cost £160 ex vat, which is ridiculous but is the price you pay for a custom part for one laptop as opposed to a commodity part for a desktop.

Be thankful it's insured, and £100 is nothing compared to what you could pay.
  • thanks for all the replies...the insurance company put me in touch with a repair company..they are going to come and pick it up 2day..if they cant repair it then they want an extra £100 (on top of the £100 excess) to retrieve my data :( turning out to be quite an expensive week :( but i need my data back!

where can i find cheap laptop insurance from a reliable company?

PS: I need seperate insurance, not adding to my house insurance. Cheers.
  • Hi all

Can anyone point me in a good direction for resonably priced Laptop Cover? My contents insurance company want to increase my monthly premium from £7.30 to £25 pcm  which i think is rather steep.

    Any help much appreciated.

PS - Love this site - :rotfl:

  • I don't know the costs but a friend of mine has his covered by PC World's 'accidental cover' plan. He has made 2 claims in 3 years and says PC World were very very good - prompt repairs and he even got a new replacement on one occasion.
  • Thanks for the reply, will check this out.

My laptop was damaged recently and a claim submitted to my insurers. They arranged for delivery of my laptop to a computer repair claims assessor called THE SOURCE http://www.claimsupport.co.uk/outsourcing/step8.htm who have said that it is beyond economic repair.

They offered me an equivalent spec computer but I would have to pay...wait for it...£700 above my single item claim allowance of £1500 making the cost of the laptop they offered £2200. I can buy the same laptop on the high street for £1600!! Not only that but they are charging me £30 to return my hard drive. I wouldn't mind but I was told by them that the hard drive had to be in the laptop to check if it was repairable, even though I could have removed it myself.
Furthermore they also say that the laptop is now their property to dispose of and no longer mine.

It seems to me that the only winner here is The Source as they get to sell my laptop for spares (probably make £500 as they have all the batteries, power pack, restore discs and original boxes), plus they are trying to make an extra £600 over the high street price of the offered replacement, AND charge me for my own copyright material on my hard drive! They are ripping me off AND the insurance company!

I really don't know what to do about this as I have paid the £30 for return of my hardrive and the policy excess will cost me £60- so £90 down and no replacement of my laptop yet.

Does anyone know where I stand legally with this?? Surely the laptop is my property regardless of whether its irreparable after all the insurance is supplemental cover that i have paid to insure the article? What are my options?? Please help!!
    Thanks in advance
