A few poster in this thread seem to under the delusion that
A) there plenty of jobs to go around
B)Basic jobs pay enough to live on
When even your party is questioning what your doing you have to start to think you may be doing something wrong.0 -
There are jobs around - they may not be good jobs and may not pay well, but ere are plenty about.
The only answer really is to do what they're doing - make life on benefits as unpleasant as possible.
I would say that this should not include people who've worked for years and find themselves jobless suddenly - the degree of help available to them should increase substantially.0 -
I wanted a small job doing, just vinyl laying in the bathroom. tried advertising, asking around and eventually the internet. one person answered, a polish man. He turned up on time and stayed at the job till it was finished. He did extra without me asking or even thinking about it, built up the floor to the level of the hall so there wouldn't be a step, was worried that as i was elderly i would fall on it. Sorry fells but for all the screaming about the poles they are hard working and reliable.0

Ive worked all my life and have recently been made redundant...looking for any kind of work I applied online at Pizza Hut of all places...half hour filling in sections and online questionnaires only to have an email sent immediately after clicking submit that is was unsuccessful ! The job centre thinks its because Im 42 and too old for them!....gets to something these days when the computer tells you you haven't got the job before a person even sees your application!0

Found this gem on another forum but it says it all really.
I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit.
In order to earn that pay cheque, I work on a rig for a drilling contractor.
I am required to pass a random urine test for drugs and alcohol, with which I have no problem.
What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don't have to pass a urine test.
Shouldn't one have to pass a urine test to get a benefits cheque - because I have to pass one to earn it for them?
Please understand that I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet.
I do, on the other hand, have a problem with helping someone to sit on their !!!! drinking beer and smoking dope.
Could you imagine how much money the government would save if people had to pass a urine test to get a benefit cheque?

Sounds like a good idea to me, but bear in mind that society actually freely provides drugs for some of these people so I can't see them then saying "have some drugs, but you can't have your benefits"0

The major problem with his arguement is that he has to pass the urine test so that he is not a danger to himself or others. He works in a very safety critical job so cannot be under the influence. I'd be more outraged if the company didnt ask for these tests."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -
And just to add im very uncomfortable with people on this thread making wild assumptions that every one on the dole is some drug taking alky. Thats just not patently true."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0

Well....I'm now on the dole!! I quit my job on Wednesday partly because I hated it.
However...I'm not signing on! I'm off with the TA tommorow for three weeks & have a new job to start when I get back! A better job I might ad!
Well,I got back at the end of July to find...no job! I had been offered it & accepted it,when I rang to speak to the girl who hired me,I found she was away home to Spain & wouldn't be back for a month. The rest of the idiots in the HR dept were unwilling or uncapable of helping me!
So I had to sign on again....When I was in for my interview,I had to apply for a crisis loan as it would be three weeks plus before my JSA started.
While I was waiting for the payment, the was a group of lads behind me who were late teens/early twenties in age. They were all waiting on their crisis loan to be paid &,going by their conversation, were going to Ibiza for a week a few days later!!
That made my blood boil! Here I was,a tax payer who was out of work & struggling while they were getting a loan to go on the pish!!!:mad:0 -

It's still the type of people who get the most press though, so most gets vented about those types.
If I suddenly lost my job, I'd be looking day and night for a new one, regardless if it was a totally different area to where I'm trained in. Would even go as far as to keep stuff off my CV to avoid the general response of too qualified, or you're not getting the job because you're just going to leave in 4 months time when I better offer turns up; replies.
The benefits trap doesn't effect people who suddenly lose their job, they get a paltry amount for a short period of time, then even less or nothing if they have savings or actually own something valuable, meanwhile, Mr. and Mrs. Scum, who haven't worked since being kicked out of school many moons ago, are getting rent and council tax paid for them, then other myriads of benefits ontop of that, namely; the "breeding benefit" i.e. pop out more sprogs than a !!!!! in heat, and their raking it in.
Benefits needs a reform, they need to be staggered, i.e. reduce over time, (Nazi Mode) I also personally believe that people on long term benefits, should have a voucher or ID/Credit card type system that enables them to buy from supermarkets etc. and there be a list of items they can't buy, or can only buy small amounts, to stop e.g. "You have a 4 month old baby, unless your child has an early craving for 400 Benson & Hedges, and 10 litres of White Lightning, you not think the top percentage of benefits would be better spent on nappies, and baby food instead?"
My system would never work, but neither would any system the government would come up with. Think of a system, and there's always going to be scumbags trying to corrupt and milk it.0
