you cant say that all the unemployed havent tried! i have applied to hundreds of jobs, most of them minimum wage most of them lower end jobs like cleaners and call centres and I havent been successful!

maybe im misreading it but in essence what you are saying is that coz i havent got a job! im on jsa i wouldnt have just as much chance of gaining employment as someone who is in work and applies for it!

You wouldnt know what an applicant had applied for before applying to you! you wouldnt know they were waiting for a high end job to come up!

you yourself would jump the gun and assume that fact! when merely to some JSA claimants its a job, a chance of paid work! a chance of income thats not jsa! a means to a better life! a means to independance and dignity!

I worked 7 days a week I held down 3 jobs before I became Redundant! i am not lazy i am not a scrounger, what i am tho is angry that people would stereotype and discriminate against an applicant purely because they are unemployed.

It should be a level playing field for all applicants, without stereotypical views and discrimination. if someones taken the time to apply you should take the time to give them a chance!

and the vat and tax is only gonna worsen when it goes up to 20% courtesy of the torries and libs!

I ment it should be a level playing field for ALL I.E the unemployed AND the employed!

and yes we can! blame the new government, unemployment figures had begun declining, labour stimulated growth!

Labour didnt cause the economic downturn! they happen all over the world and at any time it wasnt labour that caused it!

and LO and behold the condems get in, start with their "fair" budget which who will be affected more hmm gee let me think ................ the poorer lower income and working class! not the toffs! its the same old with the tories take from the poorer, spread out for the richer!

like i said unemployment had begun to decline! and growth had begun! now the condems are in 1.3 million destined for unemployment so it will rise!

just like years ago when thatcher was in and she shut the mines! ppl have short memories but the tories caused unemployment then and will do this time and who will be worst affected the lower income working class!

Actually, under the new budget I'd be taking home a little more than £500 a year. If I could find permanant work rather than contracted that is.

I do blame Labour for the fact that I'm 20,000 in debt with a worthless degree though...

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

That is my point you can find out what they have done at interview and thats where you decide, a person who as you say has gone to the pain of holding down 3 jobs is exactly the kind of person employers would look for, I never said all unemployed have not tried I did say those who don't try do not derserve the same chance as those who do. We do have a section on our application form that allows applicants to state why they want the job, those who demonstrate there a keeness will get an interview but ones who like a recent one put "I have been unemployed for 6months and this is the first job I have seen that offers a wage I want and am prepared to accept, so I decided this was worth applying for" quite frankly gets nowhere, whereas one that started "you are the 42 company I have applied for this month and all I want is a chance to interview and demonstrate I deserve thejob..." will with me guarantee you at least get you the chance to show that. trust me I get to see hundreds of letters enquiring for vacancies and a large percentage are severely lacking in the skills to even write a basic letter. As for the VAT I am afraid that is good news for us, it means the UK will now pay us an additional £25m/year tax I didn't even know it was going up over there, we are still annoyed our top rate has gone up to 20%

Not ALL JSA claiments are bums, its true there are some out there that simply dont bother looking for work, even go as far as making up their jobsearch attempts, finding life quite comfortable on the dole, with no intentions of getting a job. But the majority will do anything to get out of the unemployment trap, I call it a trap because once you find yourself signing on, most companies will tar you with the brush, and the longer it takes to find a job, the less chance of getting one.

Most companies prefer to employ someone who is currently employed by someone else, there are so many people who, after working all their lives, have suddenly found themselves out of work, some will be classed as "unskilled" being that they are skilled in a particular job, some will be classed as "over the hill" just because they are no longer in their 20 something, and the ultimate one being "over qualified".

Rather than claim benefits, most will opt for employment agencies, but the work is only ever temporary. I know some people who are so proud, they wont even claim the benefits they are entitled to, watching their savings dwindle away whilst they desperately hunt for work.

Its difficult enough to find vacancies out there, and for every ONE vacancy, there can be in exccess of 200 applicants, so getting as far as an interview is a major task, even that wont guarantee you the job. It must be degrading for those who show the Benefits agency all these jobs they have applied for, whilst being made to feel they have only applied for them to keep the agency happy.

Yes there are Bums out there, but we cannot tar everyone with the same brush just because they too are claiming JSA,

All governments are as bad as each other, so we cannot blame this on any particular government. We cannot blame this on the unemployed, the unemployable, or the employers. Its the system thats at fault, it needs reviewing as its a crying shame that the few unemployed "Bum's" out there, cast a shadow over the rest of the unemployed.

Sorrry OP but it works both ways . My son has applied for dozens of jobs by e mail . 90% of them go without even a " thanks but no thanks "

He was made redundant at christmas , but not claiming any benefits . All he wants is some steady work :)
mandi, there is a huge untapped market out there for oddjobbing. Not suggesting it for ever, but to survive whilst looking.
I approached a young lad in the Village, home for the Summer from Uni. I pay him £6 ph to mow lawn, weed garden, change lightbulbs too high for me to reach etc. Last weekend he pulled down a climbing plant from my single story, which was threatening the guttering whilst I held the ladder.
These are jobs too small for a maintenance firm, but too large for me.
He is so thrilled with the job, he has printed and posted flyers to get more work. I hope he doesn't get so much work that I can't get the grass cut!

The list is endless as to what an oddjobber could do. Wash the car, walk the dog, clear snow in the winter.
Fortunes have been made by small beginnings. Think Green Thumb. They spray my lawn for 40 mins max a year, including writing the invoice and charge £96 I think. If a friend had come to you with that idea, you would have laughed. Me too, now they and their competitors are huge.
Think outside the box in other words.

when i was on dole (8 years ago), i went to sign on every fortnight and joined the line, all the misfits in front of me sat down "applied for any jobs" "not seen any" "see you in two weeks then"

when i sat down it was same question and i said "i havent seen any" was told this wasnt good enough, if you dont find any by next time your JSA will be stopped" how does that work? was it because i had been to college and got a IT qualification and the others were just wasters??

then i found myself a job, went to sign off and they pulled out a red tin, gave me £80 and told me to go and buy some work shirts, trousers and shoes and bring back the receipt. i did, it was easy not to though.

when i got my first wage i went back in to give them the £80 back, they didnt want it.

i know there are real cases that need the benefits, but where i love a lot of people are just claiming cos they cant be fussed working and want a "free" house.

EXACTLY the same with me in that I was given a tougher time than the wasters. Mind you, I've managed to get work; got 2 part time jobs and am going back to uni, so I am a success story, although I did all of these things without any jobcentre help other than the money, which doesn't go far at all; I never got how doleites can afford to smoke, eat KFC daily, have Sky tv, go to Spain and go to the pub daily...I never had a single takeaway during my spells on the dole.
  • Looks like I've stirred up a hornets nest! Glad to see that others out there think that the benefits system is a joke as well!

I could report the names to the job centre but I think I'll be wasting my time - you won't believe how difficult it was for me to get the correct number to place a job advert - that's a rant for another day!

Took me 2 minutes to find phone, fax, email, 24 hour online service.

Well done but this isn't what I actually meant (but probably wasn't very clear!)...I'm not starting another rant but I meant difficulties when actually talking to some of the people at jobcentre plus.

The Irony here being the difficulties talking to some of the people at jobcentre plus, whilst actually being there ;)
