The tax office won't be able to give you a hardship payment unless there is a live claim on the system for them to attach it to. Hardship payments are generally given to claimants whose claim has become stuck through some computer glitch problem.

Telfordstar the next time you call ask if your claim is stuck at "awaiting award". When claims are put on the system this is the first stage and it usually cuts over to "award issued" within about 72 hours. However this can be delayed if compliance want to check it or there is a discrepancy such as a spelling mistake or wrong date of birth. I don't think the latter applies to you since you were told there were no apparent problems by the advisor on the phone.

If your's is stuck on awaiting award you may be eligible to ask for a hardship payment. Make sure you take 2 forms of ID with you to the tax office.

Thanks Pam for your advice I really appriciate it alot, the advisor just said that the tax credit office was looking at it and that was the norm and it didnt look like there was any problems but to call back again to check progress. Why would compliance want to check it if you dont mind me asking?

I believe a certain percentage of tax credit claims are pulled for a check I'm not entirely sure how they pick them or if it is just random. I know HMRC also pull a certain percentage of submitted tax returns to check too.

There was a glitch showing up on my claim so it could take another 3 weeks now. Cant understand why no body noticed it before the amount of times i have phoned up. But fingers crossed cant be much longer now:)

Hi OP don't know if you are still looking at this thread but uni will lend you money very easily if you go into student services, sometimes you don't have to pay it back, either way it is interest free. My old uni would lend you £200 to tide you over if your loan was late and this is a similar situation so get down there, don't just suffer, loads of students do this. Also if you do not have enough to feed your children ring social services and they will help you (although uni is the less invasive option).

Hi Everyone. Im in the same boat too and I hope not to alarm anyone but I cancelled my single claim on the 22nd May and am still no where near getting payment. I call up every other day, Iv wrote a letter of complaint and each time you call you get a different story. Some of them are harsh with you and repeat 'we cant give you a timescale' others will tell you there's nothing left to be done and it should go into payment any time. Unfortunately although there was nothing wrong with my claim its still not been put into payment. Some of the staff say approx 3 weeks to process the claim but no one mentions it takes up to 2 weeks for the claim form to even show on there system before the 3 week processing time kicks in. I wouldnt mind but even the complaint I sent in got ignored and I havent had a reply despite being told the complaint is showing on there system.
They are absolutely pathetic. They have no specific process, no timescales, rude staff and they have absolutely no care about how a family is expected to live with nothing. It will be 7 weeks without this friday. I am meant to of been paying £120 a week in childcare which my CTC pays for. At first I used my mortgage money to cover the first 3 weeks but then I ran out so Im behind on my mortgage, getting charges, behind on my childcare with end of term quickly approaching(I have to pay before then). I owe my MIL £80 too. I cannot understand why a change of circumstances takes them 2 months to sort out no matter what checks they have to do.

Thanks Iv just emailed my MP but got an out of office reply. My problem is the stress of all of this has put pressure on my relationship already, My boyfriend is Bipolar and this sort of thing he cant handle, he is so ashamed. I am also 17 weeks pregnant with my parnter and have had to be signed off work sick for 2 weeks because of it all (relationship and money problems) and I dont even have the confidence to go to my local tax credits office as its in the town centre and Id have to get a bus there on my own. I cant believe one simple change of circumstances has affected my life so much. Please let me know how you get on... I cant believe they are able to get away with this. Iv spent a fortune calling them every other day on my mobile too.
