What about those who lost their job?

    Savings dear boy, savings.

Those with enough sense to take on a large mortgage would either save enough to cover a shortfall or take out mortgage protection.

Not everyone relies on the state for living expenses.

  • do you think that means it wont be affected or that they havent gotten around to hitting us with it yet? thanks

    I honestly don't know.

What if they don't have a big mortgage, or a mortgage at all? Or what if they do have a modest mortgage, why would it follow they should also have enough savings for hard times, over say, a person in rented?

What if their budget didn't stretch to mortgage protection (often a rip-off anyway, and often isn't paid out when it's needed)?

Actually, everyone relies on the state in some form. Even you. You rely on the state creating a job market to keep you in pennies, so you can spend those pennies making pounds for others. You rely on the state to police your streets, educate your community, empty your bins, police your borders, protect us from invasion, look after your healthcare, guarantee you an income should you fall on hard times, pay you a pension etc etc. You rely on the state to run all this on your behalf, in return for a contribution called tax. (And yes, it is merely a contribution).
All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume.
  • Perhaps they should have thought of that before [STRIKE]dropping ones drawers[/STRIKE]planning a large family.

Many people learn to live within their means, :T

You cant just assume that eveyone on housing benefit dosnt work. If you are working have a family but rent then lose your job what do you do with your 3 kids? Not eveyone will then be able to move outside of london!

In fairness Welshmoneylover assumes everyone (but him) doesn't work, period.

  • In fact I think the best thing the gov could do is to build more home say it cost £200,000 to build a home we would save so much money in the long term by then paying less in rent as no profit will be given. Then in 30y then house can be used to house another family. If we continue to have such high house prices and high rents there will always be a need for the goverment to top up incomes for average people.
  • thank you, will have a look

Yes, provide affordable housing. What a novel idea :)

I do hope it catches on in government. And end the scandalous council houses discount, and keep social housing, social.

I live in an area of council houses (not estate as in tower blocks) there are a few working people here, renting privately or own. We have named it 'Chav Town' - grey everywhere, learner bikers who don't give a !!!!, youths hanging around shops, young mothers etc.

We live on the outskirts thank god
