Hi Sam
I did a beef stew in my slow cooker for the first time the other day and it was yummy.
I used:-
One pack of lean stewing steak
2 tbsp flour
Salt and pepper
0.5oz butter
2 medium onions, chopped
3 medium carrots, sliced thinly
3/4 pint beef stock
You could add potatoes or any other veg you wanted.
I put all the above into the slow cooker on high for 6 hours. One hour before finished cooking I added the dumplings using:-
4oz sifted self raising flour
2oz suet
Pinch of salt
Cold water to make into a soft dough.
I put any leftovers into the freezer for another day.

Hi, what types of beef can I use for casseroles (probably in slow cooker).
"Proper" casserole beef is quite expensive and wondering if I can use frying steak (or similar)?

Found it - fantastic!:D
Honestly, this is my 1st online shop - it's taken me about 3 hours and I'm exhausted!:o
Have added 2 at that price - (1 lot to make and one for the freezer for next month.....) and it's taken me to £53 so I can grab my £10 off the order:D.
Phew, it's been a struggle and much harder than walking around the store - but I've got a load of store cupboard stuff that I would've missed in store and not got the junk that I'd be tempted to buy instead.;)Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

I am lucky and have a very good butcher near me and I buy flat ribs (also known as short ribs) for making my stews it does take a bit longer to do but the taste is amazing and I can buy a fairly large piece for £7 and make 3 meals from it.
recipe i use:
(get butcher to cut flat ribs in to pieces that fit in to your slow cooker)
brown ribs in a frying pan, put browned ribs, chopped onions, carrots in to slow cooker add beef stock big glug of red wine if you have any hanging around, mixed dried herbs. I usually slow cook over night on a saturday then sunday morning take out ribs shred meat off bones get rid of excess fat etc blitz the sauce in the slow cooker with a hand blender put in a few gravy granules to thicken it up then add back the meat.
serve in a giant yorkshire pudding or my kids favourite way is in bread rolls just make sure you dip the cut side of the roll in to the gravy first then top with shredded beef.0
