  • Beef done in the SC can smell really strong, I find; I usually disguise mine with some tinned tomatoes and serve it with mash. Did you brown and drain it first?

  • What else did you add skintchick?? Some herbs, or anything to help the flavour a bit?? It could be that - I tend to use some beer or a bit of wine when I can spare it (sob sob). A spoonful of sugar sometimes does the trick too....Maybe you could ditch the liquid it is in, make a good thick gravy instead and see if that helps??Add some puff pastry (frozen just roll is a good one) for a lid brush it with beaten egg & bake for about half an hour...best wishes...

Ooh, I've never done beef in the SC before so maybe it's that.

I think ditching the liquid is a good idea - it doesn;t smell off, just smells like canned dog food _pale_, so I will make a new sauce for it and see if that makes a difference. I'll also chuck the mushrooms in case it's them.

Thanks guys! Any ideas for a nice sauce??

And no, I didn't brown it - I just cheucked the meat, muchrooms, water and some herbs in the SC as I went to bed one night about ten minutes after getting in from work, then turned it off as I legged it out of the door to go to work, then rammed it in the fridge for a couple of days, and then discovered THE SMELL.

I just have no time to cook/eat/sleep/live at the moment :(

  • Hi Skintchick - when i do beef casserole i always put a stock cube in, then a casserole packet mix and then some beef gravy granuales - this makes a really good base. Then i throw in the meat and veg and let cook for a day. Try using gravy or stock next time, it might help with the smell :p

No stock cube! So no flavoured gravy.

It needs to be eaten the day its cooked or at least the day after.

In which case I need to throw it away cos it's older than that now. I never have time to eat the day I cook things -= that's why I have a slow cooker. Back to readymeals for me, then :(

I can't stand mushrooms in the slow cooker from the beginning. They always go rubbery and stink when I do them, so I bet it's them! If you want mushrooms in, just chuck them in for the last hour or so.

    Easiest beef casserole is:
500g stewing steak and a couple of onions. Throw in a can or bottle of ale or stout, and about 1-2 tbsp of beef gravy granuals. Leave to cook as normal, and chuck the mushrooms in for the last hour.

We had that last night with bubble and squeak, and it's yummy
Here I go again on my own....

Made my first HM beef casserole in the slow cooker today. I put in stewing steak, mushrooms, onions, a tin of tomatoes and a couple of beef stock cubes and 1/2 pint water.

After cooking for a few hours, decided it needed a bit of a kick so added some minced garlic and chilli flakes then thickened with cornflour.

I think you need some seasoning - if the meat didn't smell off when you started, then it should be OK.
