Slow Cooker Beef Casserole

You don't have to preheat it or I don't anyway.
I'd put it in slow (my SC has low, high, warm so if that's the case choose low) and leave it on until needed. Either that or you could put it on high for 2/3 hours. I'd brown the meat off and soften onions in a pan, pop it in the slow cooker with enough water to cover it, pop some gravy granules in halfway through cooking.

Hi,
I would defo brown it first. You can put the low cooker on when you start browning the meat, just on slow, but you don't have to. Entirely up to you. I usually put it on just few minutes before transfering the meat into it so it doesn't go into cold.. it is probably silly now thinking about it, but that is what I do.
If you put it on at 11am and want to eat at 7, I would put it on low (higher then keep warm, you still want it to cook, but you don't want it to boil hard-each slow cooker is different).0 -

I never brown mine, and it comes out looking lovely. I don't use stock cubes, apart from vegetable sometimes, but your ingredients sound fine. I usually sprinkle sone flour over the veg, at the bottom, and mix it around a bit, before adding meat, and any liquid. Usually tinned tomatoes, or wine.0

I never brown mine, i'm the laziest slow cooker user ever. I just throw everything in and leave it, heck I don't even dice the fish/meat when I do chowder cause I know I can just run a fork through the chunks to break them up when it's cooked.
I'd leave it on low. Do you have any spuds? A diced potato will thicken it nicely.Living cheap in central London :rotfl:0 -
Sorry only got back on my computer to read these comments.
I did brown it first, then chopped up onion and put it in raw to the slow cooker. I did warm it up on high for a short while, then left the meat for 3 hours at high, and it's still on now at low.
I hope it's not rock hard. I must say it doesn't smell too appetising.
I used a beef stroganoff mix with added milk, but I much prefer the thick creamy jar stuff from Asda.
Oh well, I'll let you know how I got on after eating it.0 -
As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the existing thread, to give you more ideas:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0

Hello all
Me and hubbie are still alive after my slow cooker meal.:rotfl:
It was ok, a bit bland for me. Next time I may use a different packet sauce or even a jar. You can't beat a jar of creamy sauce, yum. I probably should have just used oxo cubes and gravy granules, but put in stroganoff out of a packet.
At least I've had a go.0 -
Hello
I've recently married, and as a present got given a slow cooker. I've never used one before and wanted to make beef stew. I've made stew before but only in a big pot. I usually put dumplings in it so I've got flour and suet. I've also got red potatoes, carrots, swede, onions, stewing steak and bisto powder for the gravy. Does anyone have a tried and tested method of making stew using these ingredients in a slow cooker?
Thanks, Sam0
