Just an update - I think it was a combincation of the mushrooms, and the pot burning a little. I sorted the stock with some bouillon powder, and it was OK, but in future I'll do it in a different order I think!
    Thanks for all your help.

I know there is a delicious looking one on here but is there one that doesn't require much spend?
  • The good thing about a slow cooker is that you can buy the cheaper cuts of meat and they'll taste delicious because of the gentle way the meat is cooked.

    Hi Kimberley,

As Garnet_Gem has said buy the cheapest cuts of beef that you can find as the slow cooker will make whatever you use tender. I usually get stewing steak, but braising steak, shin or frying steak will do the same thing.

I brown the meat (not everyone does but I think it helps the flavour), then fry onions, and pop it into the slow cooker.

Add potatoes, carrots, mushrooms, tomatoes or whatever other veg you have. Pop in some stock (a stock cube or two is fine), some thyme and a bayleaf . Sometimes I add garlic, sometimes I don't. If you have some beer or wine chuck it in too.

Towards the end of cooking, check the seasoning and add more if necessary, then thicken the sauce with a little cornflour mixed in cold water.

There are more ideas on these older threads that may help:

    Hi Kimberley,

I forgot to add in my original post that black pepper is essential for me and mustard can give it a nice kick if you like it. I come from the school of cooking where you chuck it in and see what happens. :o

I normally start it on high and then cook on medium for about six hours. If it seems ready before then turn it down to low. Put the potatoes and root veg to the bottom as sometimes they can take longer than the meat to cook.

Ok thanks, i've just come back from waitrose with my stewing steak and veg etc. I also bought some Pearl Barley to put in during the last half an hour and some Red Wine, there was a small one for 99p for cooking. The steak was two packs for £4.99 so I can do another stew during the week.

I'm just having a cuppa then i'll be putting it on :p

this is handy as i thought i'd tried beef stew in the sc today myself. i chucked about half a bottle of red wine in (wine was a bit vingarey but i am hoping it will be ok once cooked. also put carrots and parsnips but no potatoes as we're having it with mash. have added cornflour but it is still too watery (think i put too much water in. am hoping that in 3 more hours it will be ok, i'll take the lid off for a bit later and let it evaporate some of the water! OH was a bit worried that i wasn't using a recepie, just chucking everything in, but that's just how i cook!!

Er, hang on ... Waitrose is "dead posh"... if you want a recipe with a lesser spend, how about shopping at "more reasonably priced" shops.

    Just a thought.
