this is handy as i thought i'd tried beef stew in the sc today myself. i chucked about half a bottle of red wine in (wine was a bit vingarey but i am hoping it will be ok once cooked. also put carrots and parsnips but no potatoes as we're having it with mash. have added cornflour but it is still too watery (think i put too much water in. am hoping that in 3 more hours it will be ok, i'll take the lid off for a bit later and let it evaporate some of the water! OH was a bit worried that i wasn't using a recepie, just chucking everything in, but that's just how i cook!!
Hi rach,
If it's still too watery you can either add more cornflour or take some of the liquid off and reduce it on the hob.
There's a thread that might help here:
How do i thicken up.....

I just made one of these yesterday, hunted around on google for a recipe and found one on recipezaar, I would have liked to have done a red wine one, but didn't have any, so found a recipe without, just beef, potatoes, carrots, sweetcorn, onion, mushrooms, parsley, stock and pepper... little bit of salt. It was rather nice. I had to thicken it up a bit more with some cornflour, there was normal flour on the beef before browning and some in the pot, but it was still a bit runny for me, it was fine after a bit of cornflour though.
I had mine on medium from around 1pm and turned it to low, around 4.30pm.
I need to gather up some more SC recipes, I want to use it a bit more at the moment.

Just a thought.
Waitrose is my only supermarket for miles except for a small Somerfield who didn't have anything. I don't drive so waitrose would have to do, but now I've made one I can do a shop with tesco online
The Pearl Barley seems to soak up a lot of liquid and tastes quite nice at the mo, still going to cook it until it tastes right0 -
Evening all. I don't often venture in here but I do lurk. I have a question and I need your expert opinion
I bought some stewing beef and as it was on its best before date I froze it that day. I took it out of the freezer approx yesterday morning (I can quite remember when). I realise it now needs using so I am going to make a Beef Casserole tonight (but it's for tomorrows tea). Do you think this is safe to eat?
I have a slow cooker with 3 heat seatings (Low, Medium and High)
- How long can I cook it for on low? Is it possible to over cook it? (I seem to recall there can be a food poisoning issue with cooking something too long)I was thinking of turning it on at about 8 - 9pm and switching it off when I wake in the morning (about 7:30am)
- If I cook it overnight and turn it off in the morning do I just reheat it in the evening in a normal pan or could I use the high setting on the slow cooker?
Thanks for any advice.:T*Thanks to all who posts comps * :j0 -
I'm a bit of a slow cooker virgin but i thought i'd give it a bump. Someone who has knowledge should answer soon.

I would not heat it twice. I think I would prep it ready for morning - having checked it smells ok - trust me you will know if beef is 'off'' then leave it on all day on low
remember beef (& other meats) are 'hung' for up to 12 weeks before its sold so BB dates are just that .....a guide to when the shop would like you to buy again lolI THINK is a whole sentence, not a replacement for I KnowSupermarket Rebel No 19:T0 -

Thanks for the bump Sugarhunny1!
And thank you Psykicpup - I think I'll do that. I've prepped the veg and they're all ready in the slow cooker. I'll turn it on tomorrow morning then as that sounds best. The beef is losing it's colour a bit but I'm not too worried by that, but I will check it doesn't smell.
I don't know why I'm bothering doing it anyway cos the kids are only gonna moan and refuse to eat it. I'll enjoy it though:T*Thanks to all who posts comps * :j0 -
anything left over can be frozen in 1 person sizes for later:beer:I THINK is a whole sentence, not a replacement for I KnowSupermarket Rebel No 19:T0

The beef losing its colours is not an indicator of it going off.It could just be freezer burn.As previously said you really will know if its unfit to eat cos it will stink! As for the kids cant tell you how many hours I've sweated blood over meals for my four to turn their noses up without even tasting it so dont be downhearted we're all in the same boat:mad:
