Wii Fit questions

I find the wii fit somewhat unreliable. You are supposed to do the body check (or whatever it's called) on a daily basis. It then flashes up your bmi, you have to click a button to see the actual weight, however it then tells you if you have lost or gained in lbs. I pay little attention to the actual bmi or weight as I go to slimming world and get weight weekly there and it's ALWAYS different to the wii fit!! I have however found it a great way to get back into exercise which I had gone without for years!! I think if you take the weight and bmi bit with a slight pinch of salt and concentrate on what's actually happening on a weekly basis (hopefully a loss of weight!!) then it works a treat!! I am now however starting to find some bits a little slow and am wishing that there were more fast paced aerobic activities but I am hoping to get the wii fit plus for xmas and maybe there's something on that!!

    Hope my advice helps!!!

I am thinking of buying a Wii and Wii Fit Plus after Christmas, as I need to do more exercise and in the reviews I've read it looks effective and fun (so long as you actually use it, of course!)

BUT I am disabled and I am a bit concerned that it may not be suitable for me.

    So my questions are:

The 'Balance Board' looks a bit small to me - how easy is it to stay on it without falling off? Also I have balance problems anyway - does this board move about or wobble at all? If so I definitely will fall off... :o
(I can do standing exercises so long as it's at a slow pace and I am on a stable ground, hence the question.)

How gentle can you go with the exercises? I don't want a virtual personal trainer teling me off all the time for things I can't do anyway!

I don't suppose it has a 'cripple setting' (), but is there a way of entering the information that you are 'not as most folks'?

Unfortunately I don't know anyone who has one of these, otherwise I could go and ask to have a look at it. So all helpful comments gratefully accepted!
  • My personal opinion is that Wii Fit is a waste of money! Thing is they are in demand, so you could buy one and if you don't get on with it, you could sell it on ebay without losing loads of money. Maybe buy a 2nd hand one from ebay.

The board doesn't really move at all, think of a wider set of bathroom scales, they move less than them. Put simply you won't feel it moving.

For a laugh go to Youtube and watch Wii Fit Parody

ha! ha! I like the black couple, he's stepping up and down on the board and she's boogying away next to him like there's no tomorrow!!

I agree with dave, a total gimmick, if yuo really want to lose weight, get out the house and get some fresh air (it isn't toxic).

Thanks for this davetrousers, that Youtube parody is great, and it has given me much more idea of what the Wii Fit looks like! I love the statement that Wii Fit looks great with anything from Ikea.....

Paradoxically the Youtube film has made me think it might be suitable - it would be helpful for me to have some feedback about my balance because I don't have much sensation in one of my feet.

Mmmm. Food for though. And a great giggle!

I don't want to lose weight, I want to try and keep my body working for as long as possible. I do get fresh air a lot, but I can't walk very far or easily, and the risk of falling over is rather a pain! (literally).

I don't have a weight problem at all though, so I suppose it's not all bad...

    :D
  • If you have balance issues then the Wii fit will not be very suitable. The games are all about balance and posturely shifts to control the Mii. What about a recumbant bike? Could you sit on that without losing stability?

As Patchwork Cat says, the Wii Fit board is designed to help with balance and posture, although I don't think you would fall off unless you really don't have good balance at all.

Not all of the exercises are based around standing on the board; quite a number can be done whilst stepping on and off the board. There's a step exercise game, like one of those dance mats which doesn't involve too much effort. The yoga exercises are probably the ones where balance is important. But with time you might find it helps as it does train you to gain better balance and posture.

I suppose it all depends on the extent of your disability.

The virtual trainer is a nice lady and won't tell you off. You will get messages up on screen saying "why haven't you been on for 90 days" (like me..haha)

But you can practise the balance in the privacy of your own home starting on a very low level without the fear that others are watching you.
Yoga gets you use to improving your posture and balance, little by little much less intimadating than if you were in a class.
Some of the games such as the ten pin bowling is not exertive but keeps your body flexible.
I can't get my working at the moment, we've recently gone Digital in this part of the country and i can't get it to tune in, i've got an 8year old niece, i'll get her to fix it.
Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

  • I have broken my ankle 3 times so have balance issues, I bought a wii fit and found it invaluable in correcting my balance. U can see just how much you move when you don't think you are! I would definitely invest in one, even the simple 'games' such as putting the ball in the hole really helps to correct your balance. The yoga positions and the standing one leg moves I find too difficult at the moment but I can see improvement. Comparing to the first day to several weeks later I can see a marked improvement in my balance ......... and its fun!
