Ted - exercise has helped me lose weight before, and I already do marital arts classes two or three times a week - I'm not going to give them up because of a few scientific studies linked to in an internet forum!!

now whether it's a metabolic thing, or whetherexercise simply makes me feel better about myself because of the seratonin/endorphin levels and that keeps my eating on track, I don't know, but I do want to exercise and asked whether the aerobic part of wii fit was any good, and whether anyone else had lost weight using wii fit.

What I don't want is a big complex discussion full of links to one-off studies, no doubt also promoting how good vitamin D is for us;) - no, I've not bothered to read them, because tbh I have read plenty of your posts before and know how they go....

Angela - thanks for your replies, that's the kind of answer I was looking for - my husband works shifts and when DD goes to bed at 8 o'clock it's too easy to sit here on the pc, or just sit watching TV, when I could be getting up and doing something better instead. I'm 38, and did cycle to work until I made the connection between my flat feet pain and cycling.

  • We love our Wii fit but it's not exactly aerobic! However, they are bringing out a mat soon (can't remember what it's called) which looks really good, and will involve more energetic exercise.

    Definitely going to buy one:j

Why don't you READ my posts BEFORE you make a fool of yourself by claiming things I did not say?

I actually wrote Please DON'T think I am against exercise. The evidence the aerobic exercise is good for the heart and brain is absolutely overwhelming. So find an energetic physical activity that you really enjoy and is really good fun and do that each week whenever you can.

Although in fact I could have provided links to research showing the association of low vitamin d status to insulin resistance and explained how this ultimately impacts on weight gain and provided links to studies showing the association of D3 status to obesity, in fact I refrained from doing so and I assure you none of the links in my previous post are linked to D3 information.

This thread is titled Anyone lost weight with Wii Fit? and the links I provided detail the reasons why increasing exercise in the long run does not lead to substantial weight loss. It is reasonable everyone knows this before shelling out a lot of money.

If you can't be bothered to read the links or make the effort to understand the science underlying fat accumulation you will continue to indulge in futile activities and waste time and money on futile solutions.;)

  • Just found this link to the Wii family trainer on Amazon. It's released on 30th September, and you can pre-order. Bound to be a rush to get one for Christmas!

It looks good fun with some more aerobic moves than are possible with just the board.

    You are very welcome.

There are a lot of different 'exercises' you can try on this. I rather like: the hula hooping (swinging my hips in circles inelegantly) and the step (I have never done it before - it seems simple compared to classes I have witnessed, but at least I can do it!)

My family like the running ones (you run on the spot for what feels like ages - but then I don't like running!), the skiing ones (for balance) and the yoga.

We certainly haven't tried them all yet but plan to at least *try* them soon... I am currently aining for more than 10 mins a day - not exactly high level - but far far far better than nothing.....

    ;)

after a couple of thousand posts I know your links are not going to be to anything less than 6 paragraphs long, and I know they will be heavy on the scientific info and more than likely heavy on the benefits of vitamin D. That's just the way your posts seem to me, Ted, so I don't read them anymore.

Sorry if you think I'm making a fool of myself.

SparkyG - I'd not heard about the Wii family trainer - that looks good! A bit like a dancemat - I'll do a bit more homework on that!

i love my wii fit, i do approx 30 mins a day mixing between the step exercises, hula hooping and the muscle and yoga stuff
has it made me lose weight? well in a way yes, im more active than i was and watching what i am eating
my problem is being consistent, i need to use it at least 6 days out of 7 otherwise i drift away from it

but its great for motivation, sometimes once i've done my half hour on it then i also go on the cross trainer or stick a exercise dvd on

it looks ok, dont think its for me, i'll wait til it comes out and see the reviews, i have the dance mat game and tbh its never been used since i got it (actually gonna try it just now) so i'll give this a miss for the time being

this looks fun, and will be good for the arms, which i think the wii fit is lacking, apart from the kick boxing and some of the muscle exercises theres not much for toning arms

I use my daughter's wii fit and it's great. Works for me. Favourites are the skiing, hula hoops and step. I've lost a bit of weight but I'm slim anyway so that wasn't my main motivator. I think my waist is much more defined, I'm certainly a bit more supple, and my posture and balance have improved.

Might be a complete saddo, but I find the wii mii quite fun and the way you track your progress quite motivating. And I really love when I get above my daughter on the league tables - (although usually that's because she's moved on to a more advanced programme!)

    We can't work it out
We all know exercise helps you lose weight. But does it? There is almost no scientific evidence to support the orthodoxy. Indeed, it could even do the exact opposite... Gary Taubes weighs up the facts and takes a controversial look at why the gym is not going to fix it

Why most of us believe that exercise makes us thinner—and why we're wrong.

I've lost over 3.5stone since January without increasing the amount of exercise I do. I really do not think you need to shell out ANY MONEY at all to lose weight. You simply have to eliminate those foods that raise insulin and disrupt blood sugar levels.

Please DON'T think I am against exercise. The evidence the aerobic exercise is good for the heart and brain is absolutely overwhelming. So find an energetic physical activity that you really enjoy and is really good fun and do that each week whenever you can.
The principles behind Art De Vany's exercise regime seem fine to me.
Evolutionary Fitness: the diet that really works

This talk by Taubes explains the science set out in greater detail in his book The Diet Delusion. Allow over an hour to watch the video and the book, particularly for those not familiar with scientific papers, is hard going but very rewarding.

Read this article by Eades if you want to understand a bit more about the Metabolic Efficiency you experience when your body is only provided with those foods it evolved to deal with most efficiently.

HAHAHAHAHA Exercise doesn't help you lose weight?? Biggest load of twaddle I have heard in my life! And that is saying something having read your other posts!

I'm slim BECAUSE I exercise. If I stop I put on weight. When I was training for my half marathon, I lost weight (lots) and had to eat extra to make up for it.

    It's so simple -

CALORIES EXPENDED > CALORIES CONSUMED = WEIGHT LOSS.

Show me some evidence to disprove THAT.

Exactly the point Taubes is making.
If you exercise your body compensates for this extra demand and increases your appetite. When you stop exercising your weight increases therefore not exercising while losing weight means you are NOT creating that extra demand for food so you are not increasing the temptation to eat, Similarly if you have based your weight loss on an increased exercise load you will have to sustain that load for the rest of your life otherwise the weight loss will return.

Now I used my brains and studied the latest scientific evidence. I did NOT exercise at all so my weight has come off and stayed off.
CALORIES EXPENDED > CALORIES CONSUMED = WEIGHT LOSS.

Show me some evidence to disprove THAT.

Every day while I was dieting to lose weight, (I'm now simply keeping my weight level) I ate MORE calories than my basal metabolism requires. I still do. That's why I never get hungry and why I have no cravings for food or need to snack between meals.

I simply don't eat those foods that oblige my body to store surplus calories as fat.

If your body goes into a very low level of ketosis (as it would have done naturally if we ate as our bodies evolved) surplus calories get sent down the loo in your urine or expelled on your breath or in your sweat as ketones.
So it is perfectly possible to eat more calories than your body needs for energy expenditure and lose weight. (I should however also make the point that if you limit your complex carbohydrate intake to between 40-80g you will not be eating sufficient carbs to increase your appetite. When your body is burning ketones it is a slower more sustained process so you do not get to the point where your body is urgently calling for more food and now. This means you can skip meals or manage with fewer calories without actually feeling you are limiting yourself unreasonably)
Dr. Michael R. Eades explains the metabolic advantage of low carbohydrate eating here Metabolic efficiency

Here is what Feinman has to say on the subject.
What we teach medical students is that insulin is like the faucet that controls whether dietary fat flows into stored fat (or is oxidized). So both insulin (through carbohydrate) and fat are important. Insulin will control the efficiency with which dietary calories are turned to fat but you can overpower a low carb diet. It is true that people with type 1 diabetes are typically thin because they cannot turn dietary fat into stored fat as easily (but part of it is because they also excrete glucose). The starting point is to understand that there are examples of variable efficiency that nobody disagrees about -- people with high thyroid burn more calories and store less than people with low thyroid, animals on high fat diets (where things are well controlled) gain less weight if there is no carbohydrate, animals in which the insulin receptor is knocked out gain less weight than normal. So it is clearly possible to have so-called "metabolic advantage." It is therefore worth looking for. It is reasonable to look at the reports, e.g. from Volek's laboratory where there is major advantage to low carbohdyrate, as an opportunity to explore, rather than something to dismiss. We explained some of this in a recent paper available without subscription at http://www.tbiomed.com/content/pdf/1742-4682-4-27.pdf
It is a technical paper but you can ignore the equations and some of the detail and we try to lay out the main idea (Figure 1 shows how, theoretically, you could gain more weight on constant at intake if insulin were high).
