Next door though have been doing 20 minutes a day and so far shes lost a few pounds (in just over a week).

I spent an hour doing wii fit yesterday - hula hooping, step classes, jogging and step whilsto watching telly. It works as I am def feeling the old stomach muscles today - think next time I'll do less hula hooping somehow!!!
I wouldn't just use the wii fit alone for weight loss but it certainly wont do any harm.

I have to ask though - Would it not have been cheaper to buy a home workout DVD and done a session of crunches? I think Wii FIt is £69.99 most places?

As stated already to lose weight you must use more calories than you consume. So cutting down on foot is a definite must as long as you don't end up eating so little that your metabolism slows down. Typically around 1500-2000 calories would be what you should be aiming for during a weight losing phase. This should also be complemented with exercise so that your body metabolism continues to burn off the energy. The best calorie burner when it comes to exercise must involve using the legs as they are the largest muscles in the body and I go with the simplest which is jogging. Another reason for this is that running slowly is the easiest one to maintain for long priods so again more calories will be burned. I also do a bit with weights and vigorous hill walking - any exercise is good as long as you don't overdo it.
Just remember to not underestimate how many calories you eat and overestimate how many you burn. If you just ran 5 miles a day, 7 days a week you will only burn off around a pound of fat per week. This is why I place a huge importance on diet.

Theres a step aerobics one where the beat is played through the wiimote, you then change the channel to your normal tv channel :) But the wii is obviously still playing!

Thinking of buying a Wii fit, has anyone lost weight through using this?

Is the aerobic exercise part any good?

Any thoughts please, it seems like a good way to get motivated, but it's a lot of money to shell out if it's no good.....

i have been using it regularly and am a fan of the wii fit
but not exactly for weight loss- more for the fact that it got a middle-aged woman moving again after a decade of being sedantary.

the aerobics aren't enough to really get your heart rate up.
but there are a couple of 'free style' tasks (jogging and steps) that you could use that way if you are clever.

The good news is I have lost a couple of pounds but that is a combination of moving more and sensible eating.

good luck- the wii is good as a motivator and less expensive than a gym but you have to put in the hard work of dieting as well.

We all know exercise helps you lose weight. But does it? There is almost no scientific evidence to support the orthodoxy. Indeed, it could even do the exact opposite... Gary Taubes weighs up the facts and takes a controversial look at why the gym is not going to fix it

Why most of us believe that exercise makes us thinner—and why we're wrong.

I've lost over 3.5stone since January without increasing the amount of exercise I do. I really do not think you need to shell out ANY MONEY at all to lose weight. You simply have to eliminate those foods that raise insulin and disrupt blood sugar levels.

Please DON'T think I am against exercise. The evidence the aerobic exercise is good for the heart and brain is absolutely overwhelming. So find an energetic physical activity that you really enjoy and is really good fun and do that each week whenever you can.
The principles behind Art De Vany's exercise regime seem fine to me.
Evolutionary Fitness: the diet that really works

This talk by Taubes explains the science set out in greater detail in his book The Diet Delusion. Allow over an hour to watch the video and the book, particularly for those not familiar with scientific papers, is hard going but very rewarding.

Read this article by Eades if you want to understand a bit more about the Metabolic Efficiency you experience when your body is only provided with those foods it evolved to deal with most efficiently.

:j I like the wii fit. It is fun. It gets me moving. Its private

I am 35 and have hardly moved since having DD 6 years ago. I used to cycle to work each day - I hung up my helmet when I was 5 months pregnant, and haven't picked it up since.

I will not say that I have lost weight with it, but I am enjoying the regular 'exercise'.

If you are motivated, you have no 'need' to pay for a wii fit. You could run, cycle, do aerobics in your front room etc etc. I however struggle massively with motivation, I know it is good for my heart and my head, so I like the fun side of it, and I am motivated enough to do a little each day.
