I think you'd be quite safe to do a credit check and I doubt this debt would appear.
If you last made a payment in January 2005 and haven't acknowledged the debt in writing since then, then they are out of time to take court action, which is no doubt why it's doing the rounds of bottom end debt agencies.
On the basis of what you've said in your 3 posts I think you could send the relevant letter in this thread:

Many thanks Again FB
There are several letters on the link you supplied, but I guess the one I need is the 1st one? (no Scottish involvement at all) This might sound a bit daft, but does it matter which way around I do things, i.e. credit check first then letter or other way around? It might take me some time to get old address info together for the credit check. I’ll post again to let you know what the outcome is from the credit check0 -

No it doesn't matter which way around you do it. Let us know how you get on.0 -

Thanks Magpiecottage
You will not be aware of the circumstances surrounding the last few years of my life (and you may not care either) however, I have lived in many different types of accommodation (digs mainly) since my marriage broke up, which was actually why I got into debt. I also have had a couple of relationships since, where I moved in with the lady/s concerned, if they or some of my previous landlords chose not to register me on the electoral register then there is not a lot I can do about that. As regard the address you have highlighted, I choose not to register as I don’t see the point, I don’t vote, never have done. If it’s still a legal requirement to register whether, I vote or not, then I must admit I didn’t know that. I know they say ‘ignorance is no defence in law’ (or something like that) but it is actually the truth. I would appreciate your advice on the legal perspective, as I do not wish to break any laws.
Many Thanks0 -
I also had a letter.
Rule number 1, anything like this, don't phone the idiots, most likely they are just chancing their arm and have been passed on some old debt.
So I looked at their form.
Doorstep collectors, so on, !!!!ing send any one round my drum and they'll get more than they bargained for.
Whoever they are after don't live here anyway but we keep getting letters from these companies.0 -
I just want to clarify something if I can. I've had a couple of missed calls recently from an 015.... number. Now I don't answer calls from unrecognised numbers and never have, don't really know why but still. This morning I awoke to a lovely text telling me to contact Mackenzie Hall on an 0844 number and quote ref Mblah blah blah immediately. Now from what I've read that ain't gonna happen, I was just wondering if ignoring them will make them go away or if they will escalate their attempts to contact me?
Thanks in advance for any advice0 -
Ignore them until they write telling you what it's about. Once they do you can go from there and decide on a plan of action.0

Hi, i have received a letter From MH regarding my old mobile bill, not sure if im allowed to post operator name here. The phone was a Samsung S600 series with a flaw in design, causing navigation button and frame to connect to WAP in the pocket whenever randomly pressed (this button was not getting blocked as the rest). This caused a high bill and when i raised a complaint with them, was told that the bill will be waved but now after nearly 6 years, MH contacted me and wants a payment? I rang operator and they said, the ammount will be reviewed (again) and very likely waved but MH insist i pay the bill? That operator doesnt owe the debt but they do and i will have to pay a full ammount. What should i do? Wait till operator contacts them? Or try to file a case at the telecommunications ombudsman office?0

How old is the debt? Have you acknowledged that you owe the debt?0
