just a note to add - the school I work at is planning on showing this in the hall after school for those who cant get home in time for the start - pupils and staff - refreshments will be available :)
Love is the answer. At least for most of the questions in my heart,
Like why are we here? And where do we go?And how come it's so hard?
It's not always easy,And sometimes life can be deceiving,
I'll tell you one thing, its always better when we're together

My employer are putting it on in a conference room, you can bet people who don't like football will be in there instead of working.

As said above, life isn't all about sitting quietly or doing exams sometimes it's about enjoying the national game with your friends.

Persoanally I think the school needs to get this into perspective.

Its only a group game, not the final let alone a knock-out stage game.

If employers want to give their work force extra time off then that's up to them.

The main point is though the school loses the moral arguement about children having time off for holidays if they shut up shop on, what is basically, a whim.

My school is doing the same thing - not least to ensure the children will be picked up as usual, because many of our parents would be quite likely to stay at home to watch the match instead of collecting their kids. Also we as a staff wanted to give the children a chance to get home safely before the local pubs and bars fill up with people who might put the children at risk, whether by drinking outside before or after the match or by driving afterwards when they've had a drink.
I'm hoping that this will cast a different light on the OP's DD's school's decision.

yeh im trying to think of it that way that they want the kids home safely well before the match to miss the crowds but having the letter signed from the head of PE makes it laughable almost .

    Is this the school linky?
Personally I think its ridiculous why does football hold this great significance in people's lives? Should we allow schools to close every time the england team play regardless of the sport or is the world cup considered of more educational value than the olympics? I cannot believe that a head is actually allowed to get away with it, I would definitely be writing a letter of complaint to the board of governors.

no not hers , i think its more of a responsible idea to offer to put the match on on a tv in the school and offer any of the teachers pupils and parents to watch if they know they not going to make it home in time , as one person said

I'm not sure if I'm missing something here but surely those people talking about A level students aren't suggesting that the school would disrupt their exams for the game?
And generally for the sake of one hour in the afternoon I think it's nice that the kids get to enjoy it - how much attention would they be paying for the last part of the school day if they know the game's kicked off and all they want to do is get home asap to see it. The only issue I can really see a problem with is if it's primary school kids and the parents cant pick them up til normal time, in which case surely there can be a member of staff to look after them?
When my kids were in primary school during the Korea world cup and games were kicking off early morning the school opened early, put TV on in the hall and provided bacon butties and toast for anyone who wanted to come in early to watch it. The kids absolutely loved it and then they used the information about the teams to build into their geography work
