Interested to know how long books take to sell on Amazon? Are they modern books or old and out of print?
Hi ebayqueen, thanks for popping in. Like the user name! Amazon can be a tough one - I've sold two books today that I put on there yesterday - but both of those I guessed would sell pretty quickly, one is very popular and the other was the only copy on there of a hard to get book that would have a particular audience.
I have however had other books on there for probably 2 years which haven't sold yet. Those ones probably need to come off, but they are staying on there because I think I might re read them before I get rid of them.
You have to be careful with amazon, popular books are often listed at 1p so you can't compete with the business sellers as you won't get enough for them to cover the postage charge. If you have books that are not so popular though, they generally fetch a higher price so it may be worth it. They can be modern or old, it really varies.
You never know how long it will take something to sell, though you can get an idea if you check the sales ranking of the book you are selling (it comes up when you list it). If it's over 1 million, you can probably expect to wait a while, if it's lower, it's more likely to go quicker. But even that is not an exact science.
The good thing about amazon is that it is really easy to list, and doesn't cost you anything until the item sells. I can't make head nor tail of their fees and charges, but you do get told when you list how much you will get for that book so you need to fiddle with your prices til you get an amount you are happy with. Always compare this with what others are selling for to see whether it is worth your time.
That's probably really confusing - it is to me too. If I list a book on there for £2.00, I know I will get £3.05 out of which postage must come too. The buyer will pay £2.00 + £2.75 postage, the rest is amazon fees. If I then post that book and it costs me £1.95, I will get a profit of £1.10 - which is more than I would get at a boot sale for the same book. That is my guideline - if I can get more than a boot sale (50P), I am likely to put it on amazon.
I don't buy and sell books, so I'm not an expert on what is a good investment or not, I buy books that I would like to read, then once I've read them see if they are worth putting on amazon.
I do sell quite a few on ebay too, so it's worth checking there, though of course you may have to pay listing fees.
I hope that is as clear as mudIf you have any other questions I'll try and help!

So, I've sold another book, yay! I think that nets me £6.35 but will have to check that when I post it. Really pleased with that. I'm kind of wishing I had listed it higher, but it is the only copy on there, and I felt guilty about listing it higher than the price marked on the back of the book (even though I know others do it all the time!!).
It's a good job I'm not doing this as a business, I'd never make a decent living! :rotfl:"Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". Eoin McGee0 -

You're doing really well - and YAY on the Kindle for Christmas - lucky girl. :T
My ebay late payer left me excellent feedback so it turned out alright in the end. I've nothing for sale on ebay now which is really not good enough - must sort myself out.
Have earned myself £5 cashback today on Hotel Chocolat taster set of chocs, but won't count that in my monthly total because it costs £6.95 for the set itself. Still, all those gorgeous chocs for £1.95, can't be bad, will save them for Christmas of course.
Feeling proud of myself because I made pumpkin soup today out of the innards of the pumpkin (which my girls did a great job of carving). And I also made some yummy toasted pumpkin seeds - tossed them in oil and salt and roasted them in the oven - very delicious and now have a big jar full.
Very MSE.0 -

That's great news about your ebay buyer, yay!
Those chocolates sound nice, and very disciplined of you to save them til Christmas! They wouldn't last 5 minutes here :rotfl:
I've never tried pumpkin soup, but your pumpkin seeds sound yummy!

I'm feeling rough as houses today. Got a really sore throat and my head was spinning this morning, so haven't gone into work. I've photo'd a few more bits to go on ebay so they are ready to go on turbolister when I can be bothered.
Another book has sold on Amazon today, yay! So that is another £2.23 to the pot. I wandered down the road to the post box to post it, and it nearly killed me! I was so exhausted, needed to sit down when I came back. It's literally a couple of minutes away so not even a trek. The dog loved it though as I was going that slowly that he could pretty much sniff every blade of grass and leaf!
I've got some bits going out on ebay tonight, 5 items selling at the moment, so am pleased with that. Hopefully a couple more will go before they go out, though for some reason they appear to be finishing around 4 o clock, so not sure how I managed that! Presumably it is to do with the clocks changing, but I'm sure even then it should be after 5pm! Oh, peaceandfreedom - I've just seen in your siggie that you are aiming to make £15 per day in November. That means that unless you have some other plans, I can officially kick you up the rear and say GET LISTING ON EBAY :rotfl:
Maybe you could then return the compliment...."Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". Eoin McGee0 -

OK, my butt considers itself kicked.
I'm adding an ebay total to my sig, though I don't really have a specific target as such, other than £15 a day. Hmmm, let me see. Think I'll go for 40 items on either ebay or amazon. Sounds puny compared to yours Jwil. I'm not even sure I have 40 sellable items - well, I do, but I'm not sure I have 40 items I want to sell.
My £15 a day is not going to all come from ebay but at the moment, I'm not at ALL sure where it IS going to come from!0 -

Have you added your name on the official £10-a-day-in-November thread, tattycath? There's lots of ideas on there on how to rustle up your £10 a day.
I need the money as well, hence the high target - I did well in October so I'm hoping November works out just as well.0
