Ebayer won't allow collection

I can't believe way some of you worry, and the person is only coming to your front door! Have none of you ever sold stuff through free ads?
Sometimes I had several strangers in my house at once when selling kids' clothes, kept them to one room mind and kept an eye on them! Only did this in school hours so my little ones were not in the house, and there was nothing valuable anywhere (moved the PS2 and games upstairs when I used to do my sales).
And, oh yes, I only ever charged around £4 for really super-duper perfect designer items, so that's why I am so sure the OP should not pay nearly £12 for 3 baby clothes. Rip-off, pure and simple. Bumping up the p&p by that huge amount is wrong, wrong, wrong! :mad:PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

I know this has already been discussed, but thought I'd add my two pennies (it is a forum after all!)
Your problem lies in the this sentence in your first post. "i presumed that i would be able to collect the item."
Every eBay seller is different. Different terms and conditions, attitudes, postage costs etc. Until they had confirmed you could collect, you shouldn't have bid. Likewise, I don't bid on anything unless postage costs have been specified - after being stung before on postage costs where they were not confirmed.
I am also slightly offended by your comment. I don't have time to sit around and wait for people to collect. It is also not convient for me. I offer a very good service to my customers and have 100% feedback - a collection facility is not part of my service.0 -
Everything else aside, If they offered payment by cheque in their auction, and are now saying you can't pay by cheque, then YOU start the non-performing seller dispute. It's BOUGHT (to Buy), not BROUGHT (to bring) AND you cannot be frauded, only DEfrauded.
Please do not buy animals from a pet store. Visit your local sanctuary or centre and give a good home to an unloved or abandoned animal.0 -
Hang on... isn't there a rule that says if you don't state your postage up front, you can only charge the face value? My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -

No one has ever managed to show a link to that in the past. There is something that says all postage must be reasonable, but from examples ebay themselves give it doesn't seem that they would consider this unreasonable. Also, even if only actual postage was to be charged, who is to check the packing element of the amount?

Me three
and having just sent a load of adult clothes i sold on ebay today - including one parcel with 3 adult clothes (two tops and a skirt) none of them cost more than £2 with the new charges to post, so even with a bit extra for packaging etc there is no way £9 odd is reasonable to post 3 baby tops
this is defiantely trying to get more money as they were obviously to up their profits
personally id report them to ebay for excessive postal charges, risk a NPB and learn two valuable lessons
1 - a lot of ebayers sell on ebay value their anonomity and will not allow collections for many reasons (im another who wont allow it - privacy, doesnt protect against paypal charges, dodgy cheques / cash etc) - so never presume it
2 - never bid until you know postage costs - i dont anymore - there are so many other people selling similar items, it just is never worth itSee the stars they’re shining brightEverything’s alright tonight0 -

sitting on the fence here lol- OP should not have bid without knowing the postage price - seller is ob. trying to rip her off on it - I posted a huge bundle of cloth nappies together with liners, wraps etc and it was only £5.50 so there is NO way it is going to cost £10 for 3 baby t-shirts - I agree with others, it's not sold for what he wanted so he's making it up in the postage. Surely as the seller states in the auction he will accept cheques but now is insisting on paypal only, OP could do NPS based on these grounds? ie seller will not accept payment by method stated? Personlly, if it were me, I'd risk the neg and take it on the chin, at the end of the day, its only ebay, it doesn't go down on your criminal record and no-one you know will hold it against you (saying that, I desperately want to neg someone atm for sending me something that came out of the packaging and into the bin, but I don't want a ret.neg back though lol). On the subject of collection, I offer it for heavy items (I don't make on my postage so its no bother to me), but it isn't something I would want on every item - when I offer goods on freecycle, I put them by the gate but ob. I wouldn't do this for a paid for item. - I once bid on a bottle of perfume, noticed that it was same town, prepared to pay the post, when i won it and checked out, the seller lived 2 doors down to me, I asked if I could collect and she said NO!!!, I had no option but to pay the postage IIRC @ £3 and the cheeky begger walked round and hand delivered it!!! No, that I do call taking the proverbial!!0

I'm guessing that the seller is using the postage to cover their selling costs (its not unusual given the amount ebay/paypal take now!). However have you suggested instead of posting the item the seller may want to deliver it to you for say a £5 .......... seems like a WIN WIN situation (saves you a fiver and the seller makes a fiver for a couple of miles of travel?).
BUT if someone doesn't answer a question , I don't bid so you should'nt have bid till you got an answer about collection IMHO. If the seller didn't reply within a few days (unless they were away etc) it would give me a clue as to what sort of service I would get so would avoid them anyway.
Personally I have no problem with buyers collecting as long as they pay cash (they already know your address so its not a privacy thing), however they need to do so by arrangement that suits both parties.0
