Unfortunately you don't know until you've opened the door that it is a sales call. If it was mother in law or the local RC priest that approach could lead to some unusual developments!

yes i have sold to many houses who have had a sign up not because i blatantly ignore them but purely because if there not in the house (ie in the front garden washing the car ) and i dont need to knock on the door i havent broken any rules

What utter rubbish you speak... if your pysically on their property about to sell something whether you knock at the door or see them hanging their washing out you are still "calling" at their address.

I simply say "I'm sorry, you've caught me at a bad time.." and shut the door. I get NO returns.

Or just tell them to Go away and shut the door before they even enter a word

My No Cold Caller sign didn't work. Just had an energy guy at the door. I pointed to the sign and he said I'm not a cold caller as your address is on his list. I said yes but you weren't invited to call. He said he doesn't have to be. I said I don't want to buy anything, he said he's not selling because I already have energy supplied to my address. I said take the hint! I don't want to be intimidated in my own home.

legally they cant do that and even if you did call the police they wouldn't do anything either as its not illegall to sell door to door
It's illegal to fail to leave someone's property when requested to do so (civil trespass). The householder can use reasonable force to eject them if necessary and may call the police to prevent a breach of the peace while they do so. If your front door opens directly on to the pavement you might have a problem.
