IPhone 4 or HTC Desire??
Comments

The iPhone 4 is much the better item, the only reason people don't get iPhones and then proceed to knock them is because they can't afford one.
What a stupid comment, the only reason I didn't get an Iphone was because I absolutly didn't want one, I wasn't even going to get a touch phone, I was going to get a Blackberry, but after having a play with the Desire, opted to have that. Iphone never even came into the equation.0 -
Philosophically, I am strongly opposed to closed platforms such as those sold by Apple and I was all set to buy an HTC Desire or another Android phone but one thing that has put me off is Google's attitude to using wifi proxys, i.e. you can't and they refuse to implement this feature or discuss the fact that they are refusing to implement it. What this means in practice is that you cannot use Android phones on corporate or university wifi networks, which mostly require the use of proxies.
There doesn't appear to be any third-party solution either, except for web browsing, even if you root the phone. In other words, no VOIP calling from behind the corporate firewall. Why does this matter? Well, I think, for a supposedly open-source platform, that this type of situation should not arise. The fact that it has persisted, despite numerous complaints, indicates to me that there is something fundamentally flawed with the Android platform and its development ecosystem.
See http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1273 for more info.
However much I deplore the Apple development model, its operating system is fairly mature and clearly has a place in the World. WinMo, as someone has said, is dead until WinMo 7 is released. Symbian is in transition also. Everything else is too immature, e.g. Maemo, Bada etc, has an uncertain future, e.g. WebOS or I am too unfamiliar with it to comment, e.g. Blackberry RIM. That basically leaves iphone as a pretty strong contender at the moment.0 -
Funnily enough I use my Desire on our corporate WiFi every day!
No proxies are involved though which helps...
It does seem a strange omission.

I must say, when I saw the volume controls on the new iPhone, it reminded me of a junky old £5 MP3 player I used to have. I could never live with that!
Even my friend, who is a die-hard Apple fan, laughed when Steve announced the new OS, iOS4. Why couldn't they just call it OS4?! and iAds?! Please!
I love my Windows Phones. One of them is just under 4 years old yet still has WiFi, GPS, 3G etc. It has got the latest OS on it, Windows Mobile 6.5, has a custom version of HTC's TouchFlo, and I can even put a Windows Phone 7 skin on it, if I want. Oh yeah, and I've got one of the largest online mobile communities supporting me - XDA Developers. Some members are even putting Android on it!
OP - get whatever you want. The HTC Desire is an amazing handset, and is supported by XDA Developers, as well. It is a lot cheaper than the iPhone, and does most of the things the iPhone does. Oh dear, that looks like an unfortunate typo. Viral advertising? There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.

Well you can easily compare the hardware specs online, and plenty photos to determine your aesthetic preference.
So other than that, you're left with what:
- Desire is available now, on many networks.
- Desire probably be at least £10 cheaper per month for any given plan, some suggest with as much as £150 up front too
- Android has an open market, Apple control theirs but have more apps
- Android seems to get more frequent OS updates
- Desire lets you do things like change the battery and use SD cards
- iPhone OS is a bit more slick
- iPhone 4 will take over the "ultimate gadget" crown for a few months once it's released
- for some reason, some people think people with iPhones are cooler, even though their granny's got one.0 -
people keep mentioning you are unable to change battery on iphone yet you can on desire,in 14-15 years of mobile ownership i have yet to find the need to change my battery.
to use the fact battery cannot be changed as a reason not to buy is quite simply stupid,as is suggesting people buy the iphone just to look "cool"
people should just choose a phone that suites their needs rather than asking other people, everyone has an opinion based on their specific needs/wants and budget.
personally for me the iphone does everything i want/need from a smartphone not to mention i think it looks better than the HTC.
but that is my own opinion and i did not need to start a thread in order to come to that opinion,i simply went to a shop looked at phones on market and what they could do and chose what i wanted.0 -
you could always wait for HTC to port over a european version of either the EVO or Droid and then get one of those0

I've had my HTC desire for about a month and a half, love it to bits. I did a lot of research and testing on Iphones prior to my final purchase, and I could not justify the £150 charge for the iphone, when the desire does pretty much everything I need on the iphone. I also think the desire is better looking than the iphone 3g/s and waaaay better looking than the clunky iphone 4.
When it comes down to it, the desire was right for me, i'm not bashing the iphone, but would love to see mr jobs get his comeuppance with all the tripe he's been spouting and all the lawsuits he and apple have been flinging about.Beer meter E[.\.......]F0 -
Can you manage groups for text & mailing? What I mean is create a group that I can easily add & remove names to... And here is a revolutionary thing for the iPhone ... Just be able to send a mail or text to that group name without having to add each name individually. I could do this with my first mobile that I had 10 years ago; but NOT with my 3GS!!!!!! How can the iPhone be sold as a business product if you cannot manage this.
I would upgrade just for this feature.
I completely love the iPhone apart from this annoying packing area.“…the ‘insatiability doctrine – we spend money we don’t have, on things we don’t need, to make impressions that don’t last, on people we don’t care about.” Professor Tim Jackson
