  • They use multiple names, lie about using multiple names, promise a service that doesn't happen, then invent new hidden costs once they've got you by the g****s. If you refuse their 'services' they are extremely rude. I am waiting for them to return my drives. I don't know if they will. They are liars and crooks. I wish I had read the countless warnings about them before sending off my data.

    Be warned!

Hi, my experience with Fields Data Recovery was a few months ago when I sent an external hard drive that I accidently formatted
(dont ask) I sent the drive to them after one week they said that they could recover all the files and sent me thumb nails pics for me to assertain that they were all recovered which they was.
But the price would be £399 + vat As much as I wanted the files I could not afford that sort of money. So I looked around locally and got it done for £195

  • I made some inquiries to a number of data recovery firms, including Fields Data Recovery. I decided not to rush into anything, and for the last 3 weeks Fields have been calling me on a daily basis, even weekends! After the first couple of times I stopped answering, but they still call - none of the others do this. Thanks to the comments here I certainly won't be sending them my HDD.

If Fields are that bad, how have they got so many good reviews at Trustpilot. Or is it a simple case of Don't-Trustpilot?

Back to data recovery. I have a WD Caviar SE16 (7 year old SATA1).
It died and is not recognisable by any BIOS. It makes quiet ticking noises for a few seconds at powerup and then goes totally silent. Doesn't sound like a major h/w (disk) issue to me (but I'm no expert). A local shop has quoted £50 to recover data but am dubious as I doubt this is an issue which can be solved purely with s/w.
Can anybody recommend a data recovery place? cheers.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

This thread about an aviation related supplier who seemingly fails to deliver while having glowing reviews on trustpilot is interesting.
    http://www.pprune.org/private-flying/476735-proviation-customer-care-problems-18.html
(the link is to the last of 18 pages(!) on the thread)

It is alledged that any bad review on T.P. is flagged up by the owner for "violations" of the use of it and subsequently removed while glowing reviews are left on.
Meanwhile customers are complaining to trading standards and threatening civil court action, making chargebacks via their credit cards and via paypal.
Several have put up negative reviews to test whether they are removed - and sure enough they find they are.

So no, based on this I would not believe a word of trustpilot.

Don't be fooled, Field data recovery are very expensive, they don't tell you their prices up front and rely on your desperation to pay up, once they have your valuable data (hence the great reviews, clearly they do this at an exhorbitant price). I was fooled by the local address on their website thinking they had an office in Manchester but this is a pick up desk only, everything is posted off. Their telephone staff are polite and friendly, they will promise you lots of things which in my case they didn't deliver. Was very disappointed that all they did was run a similar piece of software that I had already done and which I had already explained in advance I'd done. They lead me to believe they'd open up my faulty phone for a free diagnostic, as it wasn't switching on, but they wanted over £400 for the privilege. They advertise a speedy turnaround but mine was several days over the 48 hours they promise, total time wasted was a week and the courier charge back to me . Unhappy they weren't upfront from the start from the initial call when I asked questions regarding costs and time and methods used. My advice do your homework, check out all other ways as it could be something simple or be retrieved using online software which is much cheaper, and don't be fooled by the friendly polite sales staff, its a technique to gain your trust. Check out their Facebook page it has a more true reflection of what their customers think as negative reviews like mine on trust pilot are removed.
  • NOTE: I thought I'd be fair and contact them (via their so-called complaints procedure) prior to posting a review online so that they could have the opportunity to make amends, but they refused to accept that they had made any mistakes and/or apologise for their obvious incompetencies. It just sums up the lack of customer care of this company.

These are my complaints regarding them:-

    - Timewasters even with express service; their express service (which they just applied without confirmation because I said I wanted the data "as soon as") increases the cost by at least 50% and, in my case, took as long as their so-called standard service, i.e. >3 days (took 1 week in total from them receiving it at Fields Data Recovery to us receiving the recovered data at our office)

    - Way too expensive, even when you state you're a charity (which is for whom the data was being recovered); you'd expect them to be charitable given the margin of profits they're receiving

    - Can't understand simple instructions and mix up files you're referring to so talking to your 'account manager' becomes a really painful experience as he isn't at all clued up technically and waffles on about data being very difficult to retrieve, bad sector, a lot of work to retrieve the data, and whatever else he can make up

    - Whatever you do, do not specify the files you're after, otherwise they'll only look for these specific files and get that wrong too (so just better to specify you want *everything* back)

    - Related to the above: had to do at least 4 iterations to get the files I needed; they could have just done it the first time round (delay was as a result of their incompetency and nothing else)

    - Tend to come up with made-up excuses, e.g. a MySQL file being in a damaged sector when it actually wasn't even there, requiring SQL viewer to find out what the last modified date was on a (MySQL INNODB) file (especially when they achieved that in a previous iteration without the said application)!

    - Can only provide a reliable list the first time around (on their portal which shows Last Change/Modified timestamps next to each file and the folder/file structure); their "linux" software doesn't work for subsequent iterations (what?!) which means you're provided with a list of text files without timestamps (for subsequent iterations) so it becomes impossible to determine if a certain file (which is in multiple locations) is the correct, updated version you're after

    - They don't care one jot about customer service; all they're after is your money so don't give it to them until they've met your every demand and you're sure they've recovered the files you're after (I guess this is stating the obvious and applies equally to all data recovery companies)

    - Once they get the money, their responses become a lot slower and/or stop completely (surprise, surprise) and it's you who has to call them (only to find they're not at their desk (conveniently) each time you call)

    - They provide an FTP link to some of the data (so you can retrieve the most important data prior to them sending it physically) but, again, as I mentioned earlier, with specifying a list to them you know they're just going to get it wrong (which is exactly what happened in my case even though I spelled it out to them clearly along with the full path to each file and in which priority I wanted the data)

    - Only went with these guys because they were recommended by a friend and - because I was desperate to get it sorted and wasn't thinking straight - I didn't read their reviews beforehand

    - Try more reliable companies who have better reviews (look on other review websites and forums too to get an idea)

P.S. I joined just to save others from these guys.
