No need to be embarrassed by those jeans - they sound like a bargain!

Mr Daffs is very cool indeed :):) Funny you should say that about musicians, most of the ones I know work part time, don't have much money, and spend nothing unless it's on beer, food, or instruments! :):)

(*must* get in the bath before it goes cold, pah!)

Mags, thanks for getting Cheery to expound on her lifestyle and the unnecessaries - Cheery, I admire you even more now! I sort of have an unnecessary thing going on myself, tho its bigger than yours because it does more - not only bus tickets (often used for mystery shopping) and postage (usually amazon parcels) but fresh food, the odd train ticket, all sorts of stuff.

Probably off for the weekend now - see you later on.

    Morning :D

(actually, not feeling too good today, didn't sleep too well, got a headache, and some bloke over the road decided that 8 o'clock on a Saturday morning was an appropriate time to start drilling and smashing concrete )

Anyway, not going to think about that! WI today, and visiting a friend in hospital this afternoon, and some PhD, and some pottering, and some transcribing, and trying to impose some order onto this house etc etc etc etc etc etc :rotfl:

Yes, thanks Mags for making me expand on all my bits of budget! It really is interesting to think about things and 'justify' them (not that you were making me justify it, maybe it's more about 'explaining' and looking at my own reasons!)

It's funny how our budgets just evolve to work out what fits! I've just dug out a cash book I started in July 2007, I don't think it was the very first one, but it was close to when I started sorting things out. Thought it might be interesting to post what it says! (or some of it at least!)

PhD money was just stopping I think, and my income was around £700 a month (I think it was around the time I was just finishing paying off credit card etc). Anyway, August 2007 budget (cash, not including bills etc) was:

    £100 food Spent £268
    £70 entertainment spent £184
    £40 van spent £73
    £10 allotment spent £1
    £5 clothes spent £5
    £20 presents spent £36
    £5 toiletries spent £5

£250 in total actually spent, er, £480...:eek:

(well, it amused me anyway!) I've written down everything I spent, and am now horrified at some of it! Looks like I got slightly better though - September was about £5 over budget, October £25, November £100 (oops, getting worse again...) :rotfl:

    What a good lesson!
  • Sorry you slept bad - nice seeing old things like that isnt it - :)

I'm off to catch up on what you've been upto! (I was thinking more about that fleece but don't want to be a fleece hog)

    Will PM you :)
Total debt 26/4/18 <£1925 we were getting there.
Total debt as of 28/4/19 £7867.38:eek:
    minus 112.06 = £7755.32:money:

Morning Cheery, hope you start to feel better as the day wears on.

Funny that you should be looking at old notebooks. That is exactly what I have been doing this week. As I moved all my things into storage when I moved I kind of "lost" stuff. Having just emptied the storage I have been rummaging through boxes and came across my notebooks. It really pulled me up short because - unlike you- I definitely got worse when I met my OH. I am now back on the straight and narrow and just bought a new notebook to start keeping track again. I also "borrowed" your envelope idea if that is ok. I might even steal your idea of posting an old notebook entry onto my diary because I find that real motivating.

I have to say we are lazy as well, tea bag in the cup but I do love to make a pot of tea, esp when we have a cooked breakfast, maybe thats an Irish thing.

(When we were growing up my mum used to drink tea by the pot - now she just has an extra big mug!)

My essential is a china mug - can't bear to drink from anything else - Mrs Bouquet or what!

We always used to have tea in a pot (even if it was just tea bag tea) - don't quite know what happened there! Must reinstate that - I'll start this afternoon :j How awfully civilised! No china cups for me though red (do you mind me calling you Red??), I mostly drink from a large mug that I painted myself in the mug painting cafe (how fab is that??) It's got badly drawn flowers all over it, is getting a bit chipped now, but I love it :D

The envelopes idea wasn't mine cherisong, so steal away! :rotfl:I actually only use two at the minute - they're little fabric kind of envelope things that I made, one for food, one for unnecessary (I have one hidden away for the emergency money, but I'm adding to that in the bank at the min, rather than cash). I carry both around in another purse thing with my cards in.

It was really motivating to post my old budget actually! It's interesting that I allocated a different amount for food each month as I was trying to figure it out - £100 one month, £60 the next... I actually work much better with a weekly budget, and at the min have £25 a week for food - I pay half of what we spend, and often don't spend £25, but I like to have a bit extra, and it means occasionally I can splash out on strawberries etc :j Whatever I don't spend at the end of the month goes into the van fund/holiday fund/whatever's on the go at the minute

(must dash and eat pancakes!) :j
