mtbbuxton - welcome - I have three machines - all very basic non electric but complete with main bed and ribbers, lace carriages etc......... the short answer is YES you can do them on a machine - the learning curve is what may just hold you up to start with. can you post a picture of what you currently make? or the pattern you use - I can then have a look see and decide how easy and quickly it can be done. I am currently doing hats, hats and more hats - I tend to get stuck on something for a wee while and stay there!
Morning folks, have the hairdresser arriving this morning so need to be sorted - but will be back later........cuddles and love to you all

I've posted pics below of one of the types of jumper I knit. The basket weave isn't needed on machine knitted jumpers as I plan on using multicoloured yarn, but the shaping is essential. They're knitted from the bottom up to the ribbed collar and the main body has an increase at each end of every other row. For the leg holes, I split and knit in three panels before joining at the top once they're all the desired length. There is some reducing across the width of the sweater at the top near the collar and there is a garter stitch border all round. Hope that makes sense, but if not I can PM you the pattern.

It's a very simple pattern when hand knitted, but I'm not sure how it would translate to a machine.

I've spotted a few machines on Fleabay which I've also posted links to and am hoping you could advise me of their suitability or otherwise ( I'm in no urgent rush to buy anything, so if these are no good I can keep looking)

I have absolutely no knowledge about knitting machines, so any advice on what I need to be looking for would be most appreciated.

  • Of the four machines listed above... only the last one comes with the ribber attachment. (SK580 ), although you can do a mock rib using the main beds - to be honest I think you would need a ribber.

I had a swift look round cyberspace yesterday for patterns for dog coats done on the knitting machine - honestly it was on my list of things to do - my bestest buddy Boab is old now and feels the cold in his bones! I have found a couple that I am more than happy to have a go with. link below to look at pattern I am happy to have a go with.... the idea being that I do a tension square then measure my dog the maths to get it to the right size for him and see how I feel when its all assembled. Fancy patterns/slipstitch or tuck stitch at a later stage - right now I would just like to get one off the machine that looks like a dog coat..... will be back when I have further news.

the pattern above is for hand knitting on DK - the knitting machines you have listed above would use coned 4 ply using the ribber to begin then transferring it all to the main knitting bed then back to the ribber towards the end....... oh and stitch up the sides. Will see if I can find any other patterns that might work easier on a machine

came across the site below - will investigate further when I have a bit more time

Sorry I meant to include that link above have a search through their IN YOUR AREA SECTION if there is a club/meeting locally go along and speak with them. it will also give you an insight into how easy/hard it is to pick up the techniques. I had to do all my learning from the instruction books for the first 4 years, then found a wonderful lady to give me proper instructions when I moved to France.

these are what ive done so far, ive got another 4 knitted but not sewn together. will come to a stop soon as ive run out of the green for the leaves:eek: not planning on going town with a wool shop till 1/2 term, so will get the flowers knitted and move on to other projects then. I do have 3 more leaves knitted so really just need a couple more. I'll buy a ball because if they do actually sell ill do some more to give to lilys mum in case she finds an outlet for them.

what do you think would be a fair suggested price for them, they are 80%bamboo 20%wool yarn, ive bought safety brooch pins for them and have some brown card tags i bought that im going to put something like Lily flower - hand made with love in memory of a special little girl along with the foundation web page address on them.
i was thinking £2 but DS1 said thats too much. someone else said £5 but i think thats way too steep:eek:

Jean - you are the Oracle of knitting machines! I had one years ago; in fact I shared it with a friend and left it with her when we moved from one county to another. We weren't very adventurous with it, TBH, but we did make a small fortune one year making legwarmers (it was the early 1980s and they were all the rage!). All this talk of knitting machines makes me want another one but I need to get to grips with the new sewing machine first! I will as soon as I can shift this headache that won't go away.

Mrs Moneypenny - I've just looked at that FB page; some wonderful quotes on there. I love the one about your story being your Mum's story. It really says it all.

Well, the weather forecast for today is 28 degrees, hot and sunny; the reality is rumbling thunder and great big drops of rain.

Update on my mum; the blepharitis (eye problem) that she had cleared up with the diluted baby shampoo treatment that the doctor recommended and, luckily, she won't need antibiotics. She had a day of singing and dancing to celebrate someone's 90th birthday party at the care home, and really enjoyed it, and my sister stayed, too, so it was good for her as well.

Beautiful brooches, Mrs Moneypenny! I think £2 is about right. It doesn't really reflect the work that has gone into them but people don't always think of that, do they? Love the Keep Calm stickers!

Roamin, if you like you could post the snowpeeps unstuffed to me and I could make them up and send them on to Mrs MP? Will save on postage - just a thought x

Mrs MP I am making up a couple of special little things for your stall, when do you need them?

Got the results of OH's MRI, nothing showing that is causing the pain :( so its just his back sending pain to his groin. However he all but collapsed in the specialists office and ended up lay down having a check up, at least we were in the right place. He has been resting ever since apart from a quick trip to Tesco's - he went for a cuppa while I raced round. Am busy making cards ready for the 'C' word so that will keep me out of trouble :rotfl:
