Welcome cazarol! There are a variety of charities that people knit for here - some for animal charities, some for Loving hands, some for local Special care baby units, cat sanctuaries etc etc...re the squares your tension, needle size and wool size will affect how many stitches you use for each square and as socky said its a bit of trial and error to begin with. Doesnet have to be exact as people who make up blankets etc are usually adept at making them "fit" so dont be too stressed about it!
As for knitting with broken arm i think when you get the bug its very difficult to sit and do nothing!! Have to say Im rubbish at just sitting now!! Regardless, welcome, get stuck in and enjoy! It doesnet matter whether you make one square a year - some will do more and some less (I am of the less variety) - every little helps and its lovely to share the up's and down of life with "the girls" as they are called in this house!
Hope all are ok as been exceptionally quiet on here! Am now off to chill and watch downton with a streatchy hat!

cazarol, well done on your first square
isom, i'm same as you find it impossible to sit down and do nothing.
glimmer of hope on the housing front, was put in touch with a lady who has a two bed flat in an area i like, looking for a house with a garden with a drive, i rang her, and at first she couldnt believe somebody wanted to give up a large 3 bed house for a flat, explained house too big, without going into too many details. so today we are contacting the council for permission to swap. fingers crossed everyone please

    Hi everyone

Had a busy weekend with lots of visitors yesterday, and shopping on Saturday, and the time just flew right past me!

Cazarol - a warm welcome to you. I hope you enjoy it here! I find that casting on in DK wool with 4mm needles, 5 stitches equals about an inch in width. Here's a link to an earlier post on the thread that explains in more detail what we do http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=39210432&postcount=1885 If you have any questions, please ask; we are a helpful bunch!

Shaz - don't overdo things if your arm aches; that's an order! I do hope that that swap works; it sounds perfect for you. I shall be keeping my fingers crossed for you, and hope that you can move really soon.

ISOM - hope that Isoke and Shiomi are starting to like each other!

PSSO - hope the fishing trip went well!

Well, the sun is beaming away again today. It's been so lovely this past week, and is forecast to last until Friday, hopefully. We're not taking any chances, though, and I shall be ordering the oil for our central heating this week! I have a feeling that when it cools off, it will come as a bit of a shock!

Will check in later and get the update done.

Good Morning one and all and lots of love tucked in! xxx
Well we had a lovely but very busy weekend. We leave for Spain on the ferry on Sunday so DS AND ddil + Sticklebrick bump came for the weekend. They were pleased with the crochet cube but I am starting a toy box here so that will be the first item.

I am TRYING very hard not to overwhelm them in my excitement so just buy the odd pack of nappies when they are on special! She has 2 sisters who have recently had babies so she has clothes etc galore!

Also at the weekend we were celebrating DD1'S engagement-- So the weather was perfect and we had a great time. Dear Grandma came too so we were only missing DD2 -- and how we miss her!!

Of course it was hard saying goodbye to DS and DDIL as this is probably the last time we shall see them without a bump-- We had a little sweepstake as to date and weight to start his moneybox! Bit of fun. Baby is actually due on Dec 17th the day we arrive home for Christmas so I am hoping he does not decide to pop in early!!!! DMIL is visiting us in Spain in the last 2 weeks of our time there so that we can all fly home together so we can not just come home early as that would spoil her holiday and her insurance is now £300+:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Now I am literally working through my work basket by my chair and finishing WIP'S -- Blimmin butterfly approach!!!!!!

PSSO -- Hope fishing was great
Shaz -- Good luck with move
Kathy-- I can hear you counting down the days!
Knitter Nan -- Your friend will become another crochet fan I am sure!
ISOM-- Hope you soon feel on top of your world!
Marru=- What a lovely scarf and great work on the squares
Pippa -- Think of you so much and hope life is not too much of an uphill struggle
Mrs M-- A new week for those dear little babies xxx
F1-- Hope you managed to get out in the sunshine x
Cazarol ---- A huge welcome to you and please pop in often x
Kinsey ---- I miss you -- Hope all is well!

I do hope our MIA'S are just having a lovely busy time but I know some have overflowing hands so lots of gentle thoughts to you all.

Well now I must go and do fiddle with all the awkward bitS!!!!! Serves me right!

Morning all  bit grey, damp and windy here today.

Fishing went well on Saturday, raining so ideal fishing weather I`m informed. The ticket he had allowed him to take home 2 fish, the rest had to be released back into the loch, so 2 fair sized fishies came home and are in the freezer for future use, and he had another 4 which went back for another day.

Got a fair bit of my latest blanket done and also knitted a neckwarmer for a littlie while I was there. Also had a wee trip to a craft shop in the village a couple of miles along the road. Didn`t buy any wool as she only had a very small stock but bought some bits and pieces for making things for the school Christmas fayre. Got talking - as you do- about knitting and crochet and next thing I knew she was on her knees hunting through patterns. Came out with three booklets of crochet items. One was lollipop angels, (crochet angels with lollies for the heads) christmas tree decorations and finger puppets. No charge as they were old stock - just a donation into the charity box on the counter !!

Had a busy day at work yesterday so was too cream crackered to do much last night, didn`t even have the energy to crochet for long. Might get some done later though. Almost finished the body of the blanket then on to the strips. Cream and a rusty colour this time. I`m gradually using up yarn I`ve had for ages, stuff which was bought with various projects in mind - jumpers for myself usually -which has been lying neglected for years in some cases :rotfl:. Put to good use at last.

Off to do a bit of freezer diving to see what we can have for our meal tonight as I`m not in the mood to go shopping.

    Back later.

Hi everyone - I've been out running errands and would have taken half the time if it wasn't for the inevitable queues everywhere I went. Still, I've ordered the central heating oil (despite the fact that it's already 30 degrees here!), and looked at the winter bedding plants but, as all the summer ones are still going strong and looking lovely, I shall leave it a couple more weeks, I think.

Chalky - we've thought long and hard about when to go back to see the family, and we've decided to see if we can go back for Christmas! It means I have to wait a bit longer, but it will be a dream come true to spend Christmas not only with the family, but in the UK, too! I really don't like Christmas French-style, so I'm looking into the ferries and so on to see what dates we can plan for. One of the main reasons that made it seem like a sensible idea is that everyone will be having time off, so it will be much more relaxed than usual, when they are all at work and school. Both my boys will have at least a week off, possible longer and, as both DILs are teachers, they and the grandchildren will all be on time off, too, so I'll be able to surround myself with them all! We will spend a few days in Weston-super-Mare with my Mum and my sister and her family, too. I can't tell you how excited I am; I just hope we can plan the ferries, and that the weather doesn't cause any problems but, having said that, we've sailed in all sorts of horrendous weather conditions, so I think we're hardened to it all!

Anyway, back down to earth - I've almost finished my snowman square for Mrs Twins - I didn't get any of it done over the weekend because there just wasn't the time, but surely this week I can find some spare time?! Next Sunday we've been invited to lunch at the farm and we should hear about their future plans for it, whether they think they can keep it going or not. So, watch this space. It would be lovely if they could, but it's such hard work so I can understand why they are in two minds about it.

Anyway, I'm off for another cuppa - running errands sure makes you thirsty!
