  • FULL TIME MUM - found this on an allotment forum................can you confirm it's the same one you have please?

    NO COOK APPLE CHUTNEY

    2 lb Apples
    1 lb Onions
    1 lb Dates
    1 lb Sultanas
    1 lb Demerara sugar
450 ml Vinegar (malt, cider or white wine)

    1 tsp Ground ginger
    1 tsp Salt
Cayenne pepper to taste ( important if you want a bit of a kick to it)

We chop it all up fairly finely, stir daily for 4 days, taste and add more Cayenne if necessary, then put into jars. It keeps for ages.
Yes, although the recipe says 900g/450g and specifies white wine vinegar. I've made it successfully with both white wine and cider vinegar (or mixture when not enough of either) but not tried with malt - I wonder if the flavour might be a bit over powering.

jean - thanks so much for the chutney receipe - will have a go at that one - I wonder if I could be cheeky and ask do you have a piccalli receipe? xx
If no-one else turns one up for you, I know my MIL makes it so I'll ask her for it.

Full time mum - I'd love that recipe, please, as long as you can find it easily!
It's the same one as quoted above

Jean - I shall give your recipe a go, too. It sounds quite low-fuss! I just have to get dates, which I need for making date and walnut loaf. I think I'm going to devote a whole day this week (if I can find one!) to making foodie things. I just hate to waste anything, so it's worth putting a day aside.
I use Humdinger chopped dates for convenience.

I usually blitz the onions in the processor as I don't like large bits - just take care not to make them too mushed up.
I tried chopping the apple into larger pieces but found that they all ended up on the top so the bottom of the jar is mainly dates and sultanas. I find my personal favourite is apple chopped a fraction bigger than frozen peas so they are similar size to the sultanas and dates. The recipe will take extra apple.
I'm tempted to add some chopped ginger to see how that works, for a change.

The mention of Date and walnut loaf has me salivating. I'm sure a glass of that liquor would wash it down well - you are a lucky girl!

The blankets are beautiful. I wish I could crochet - my mum tried to teach me many moons ago but I just couldn't get it.

quick question: There are so many different groups/schemes about that I am struggling to keep up - which one are these for? :)

Firstly Nic73 -- A very warm welcome to both you and your daughter. What a lovely wintery activity to do together and what a lovely Mum. Please stay and join in the fun!
Shaz-- I am sorry boys are still very up and down but " this time will pass" even though it does seem to be taking it's time!! Hope your luck changes with a lovely new home!
Pippa-- Lots of love to you and Doh -- I hope that wrist is beginning to behave itself!
Kinsey-- I hope you are well and things are going well with your lovely family.
Kathy -- I do hope you are managing to get some "me" time -- All this fruit/veg/nut prep is quite time consuming isn't it. I bet it is cooling a little bit in your beautiful corner of Spain.
Jean -- Love the snow peeps and how lovely to send them for such good causes. It is lovely to read your posts and feel that the light has definitely been turned on at the end of your tunnel.
Psso-- Hope job continues to go well and the pennies help with all your woolly antics and little J of course. He will certainly know all about Christmas this year won't he!
F1-- I bet it has come as a bit of a shock with Ds having to go back to school-- He sound such a lovely lad!
Anakat-- Your work is lovely --What sweet sheep -- Don't get an obsession though will you.

    Crossed posts :)))
Full time Mum -- They are a surprise at the moment but all will be revealed really soon! We just decided it would be a good idea for anyone who wants to join in to have four 6" squares all completed and tucked away. This allows us to make a quick response to a "shout" -- We have made 6 KYSTGYSES lAPPYCUDDLYGHANS ALREADY!

Jean -- You know me -- Quick is the key. I sew them all -- I find it allows me to ease any differences and reinforce the corners etc. I put wrong sides together and oversew quickly!!!

While we are talking Geezer squares--- After making 5 Lappys now it is easy to see what would help to make the task easier and even quicker!!

Please --- Use only DK wool
    Make them 6 " square
Making them in sets of 4 and in the same colour or shade makes placing so much easier and effective.

I really have felt so priviledged to work with all the lovely squares that you have all sent so thank you all for such generosity of spirit, wool and postage.
Try and do a good deed every day.
