mine sit in a basket in the cave with a towel over them, which is what my French neighbours do - but having read the above as well as an article about eating them 'wet' I shall be trying other things.....mine usually go rancid but I see if they are kept in the fridge or freezer they keep for months.....I learn something new every day - off to get some wet ones from the tree...........back with a report later

Jean, thank you so much for that link. What a fantastic site; it has just about everything you need to know about walnuts. I like the idea of being able to store them unshelled in the fridge, so I shall do that with some of mine.

I've not long finished with the hazelnut harvest here but, luckily, my neighbour takes most of them and makes the most delicious liqueur with them; it's smooth, creamy, and about 30% alcohol! Anyway, off to shell some more walnuts; they are really nice!

Nic73 - I promise you an equally warm welcome from the rest of our lovely bunch and I know we will all enjoy getting to know you!

    :hello:

Reading about the Walnuts made me :( I had a walnut tree that I had nurtured from a baby, it had just started to crope when the badger enlarged it's set and went through the roots and killed it.

I have made 4 of the silly sheep and a little Welsh lady to look after them, these are "free to good home" if anyone would like them to sell at a fundraiser :)

PS they are small the lady is 5inches tall

Anakat - so sorry to hear about your walnut tree. I know badgers need to live somewhere, but he could have picked another spot, couldn't he?

Your flock of sheep and the little lady are fantastic; the lady looks really traditional, and I love the different colours you've used for the sheep!

I also have loads of apples wrapped in newspaper in one of the barns - enough to keep us going all winter. If I had the time I'd make some chutney, but I just don't seem to get a minute to spare these days!

There was a no cook apple chutney in Gardeners World magazine a few years ago which I really like. It does take a while chopping the apples although it does say you can blitz them in the food processor if you are careful not to pur!e them.

Only trouble is, it is so delicious under cheese either on toast or a pork chop that my batches never seem to last long.

Let me know if it appeals and I'll pm it to you as I can't find it by googling.
