Sadly, it's only the attitude that cyclists are "in the way" that causes them to be.
I used to cycle a foot from the kerb where it was easy for people to pass me safely. Sadly, as time's gone on - and I've got fed up of people bumping me with wing mirrors on the way past, forcing me into ditches etc, I've started to cycle right in the middle. That means that I *am* in the way, but at least people have to overtake me the same way they would a car - by waiting for it to be clear - rather than squeezing past where there's no space.
If motorists just learnt to treat cyclists with a little respect life would be much easier for all concerned.0 -
If a cyclist is out in the middle of the road, I will get past 'em one way or another, if they put themselves in the way of danger, they'd better not be shocked when it comes a-calling0

No you won't.
You'll sit behind them, rev your engine, then yell "move over you ****!" when you get past...just like everyone else does.
ETA: And they'll think you're *really hard* for doing it...as always.0 -
What annoys me is cyclist who think at lights your car is fine to use as a leaning post, I love just jerking the car forward so they fall over.Approach her; adore her. Behold her; worship her. Caress her; indulge her. Kiss her; pleasure her. Kneel to her; lavish her. Assert to her; let her guide you. Obey her as you know how; Surrender is so wonderful! For Caroline my Goddess.0

As someone who's bike is worth more than their car.... :cool:
Cylist = Road User
Motorist = Road User
Therefore Cyclist & Motorist should enjoy parity on the highways of Britain (that means sticking to the same rules!) and both sets of individuals should maintain consideration for each other.
When in the car I always try to give cyclists a decent amount of space when passing and it horrifies me how close some people get - cyclists DO wobble from time to time and squeezing by with a tiny gap is going to cause problems if they do.
As a cyclist I tend to adopt a "primary" road position i.e in the middle/slightly to the right. Partially this is to avoid the crud that builds up at the edge of the road, partially for visibility and partially to try and stop people squeezing by with a miniscule gap. HOWEVER I acknowledge that doing this can impede the progress of a car drivers so in the situation that I have one or more cars following I will look for a suitable place to pull left and let them pass (even if this means stopping)
That said, because I tend to cycle in off peak times its rare that I ever have problems with holding people up. I think the important thing on the roads though is mutual consideration and to remember that might isn't always right
As for the helmet comments there is a bit of a debate about it as some cyclists find them to be very distracting and the potential cause of an accident. I however believe that a helmet is a very good idea indeed - as a vulnerable road user all protection is invaluable.Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0 -
