I used to be a mechanic at a Nissan Dealership back in the day. I've seen just about every dodgy practice you can think of over the years. It wasn't uncommon for traders to have "agreements" in place with MOT garages where if a car failed an MOT they'd simply ring the MOT station once the work was done and get a certificate written out without the car being seen.
i had a car that had metal pedals, that had very small rubber strips down them, due to the small strips of rubber being on them it passed a mot,but was 90% metal

lucky to have good mate like that..shame you arent nearer id use them too!

You'd have to own an mx5 first though, he only does them.
I got ripped off by mazda in 2008 for £800 for a radiator cap, slave cylinder and oil and other bits. Because the car was not driving properly I as desperate. It would only have cost me £70 if I had known my mechanic at the time.
And he does not have a garage does it all on his own driveway. Yet has lots of friends with mx5s. Great guy. Even refitted my canvas roof when a company called mazmania did a crap job and charged me £500. ;)

The pedal WAS a fail. There is no ifs or buts about it.

As you said, you used to be a mechanic.

    I can imagine it,

"It failed for the pedal, so that's a new pedal, master cylinder, servo, and what if your kids were killed by a car because the brake flexi hose blew due to a fault, so I'll change all them as well"

It's not a fail, move on.

OK it seems i have to clarify for the muppets who are only reading what they want to read..this is in capitals if the site will let me,so i am making it clearer;)
1.GARAGE NEVER KNEW WHO I WAS
2.HUBBY MATE NOT THERE..HE ON HOL SOMEWHERE IN WORLD
3.I WAS JUST ANOTHER CUSTOMER TO THEM,IN FACT NEW CUSTOMER AS MY NAME HAS NEVER BEEN USED THERE
So how was it a favoured Mot??????

I have looked at a few Hammy posts thank you for pointer..
NOW as for the quote above..this is why i have his replies folks..he is a dodgy mechanic himself..he admits to having seen every dodgy practice going..admittedly he doesnt stress HE did them, but he did condone it by not reporting his employer!!
Hammy..did you report your employer then or are you proving you are just another one of the mechanics i met on Fri????:naughty:

    1. it isnt a fail if there is a grooved or dotted metal brake pedal under rubber that is manufacturers spec. it an advisory. ferrari and similar models has bare metal grooved or drilled pedals and as manufacturers spec and are seen as perfectly fine unless they are worn edges smooth and grooves smooth and as seen as worn by tester (if it were a fail then ferrari owners will be miffed off as they wont be able to obtain a valid mot cert! when they are perfectly fine)

2.only when the metal under the rubber is completely smooth with no grooves and drilled holes will it then be a instant fail.

3 there probably wasnt a fuel leak to begin with tester beit m8 or not wouldnt allow a mate or customer drive away with such leak, even if it were a mate i would say sorry had to fail it it has fuel leak and show said m8 or customer. explain hazards E.G someone walking by car flick ciggy under car car goes BOOM!

MOT has certain exemptions to brake pedals depending on manufacturer like ferrari, kit cars, etc that has a drilled and grooved metal brake pedal, even some racing pedal you can buy at halford are perfectly legal as long as theyre not too close together or illfitted then they become a fail.
  • I would neve drive around without a brake cover

did it once when I had trainers and my foot kept slipping off, I would definatley class that as a major hazard and hope you have sorted it out before driving again.

And how can you loose a brake pedal cover on a 3 year old car?

You broke two of the general rules....

    1) Avoid stealerships!!!
They try to rip everyone off because anyone who goes to a stealership must be clueless about cars (no offence!).

    2) Never go for half/cut price MOT's!!!
The standard cost of an MOT only JUST covers the garage's labour/admin costs, there is NO room for cutting the price... Therefore your car is guaranteed to fail!

I dint lose it!...it was never there from when we bought it 1 year ago...it was made that way..someone previously said their 307 never had one..so what would you do if you bought a car without one and that was the legal design?? would you REALLY go and get one???;)
