  • Was wondering if anyone has any ideas for sweeties to use that makes a lovely pink coloured vodka as I'm thinking of making one for my brothers girlfriend. Preferably one that will make a nice sweet flavoured drink and taste yummy
D'you know, in 900 years of space and time, I've never met anyone who wasn't important

They're not sweeties, but raspberries make a pretty reddish-pink vodka. It tastes lovely, too - sort of sweet and fruity, but not too berry-ish.

Claire Bear - I've seen cola-cube vodka which is pale red, so I'd say go to a sweet shop and choose some pink coloured boiled sweets, crush and add to vodka.

I was hoping for some help on plum vodka, I was given some plums and decided to use them for plum vodka, I printed a receipe off the net that said to gently heat the sugar in a pan with the plums until dissolved and then add to vodka, make airtight and put in a dark cool place for 3 months +.

I dissolved the sugar with the plums and then realised I'd only halved the plums so couldn't get the mixture into the bottles. I then decided to give it a whizz in the blender and poured into the bottle and stored.

But when I went to give it a gentle shake this week it looks awful just a load of mushy stuff - will this be OK?

And what should I have done??

I am in the process of making red currant vodka. I don't really have enough vodka in the house (tradegy I know!) so have used half the amount from the recipe (650ml-ish) to 200g each of sugar and red currants.

Can I top up the vodka as I go along? Is Absolute too nice a vodka to be using for such frivolities?

And can I add other fruit as I go along? Maybe a few blackcurrants from the garden or some blueberries? or would that be strange?

And finally - when can I expect to be able to drink it? When the sugar has dissolved? I assume it just gets better with age.

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.

I made lemon vodka using Sainsbury bog-standard stuff, White sugar and good quality sorrento lemon peel. Left it for 3 months shaking every fortnight or so and keeping it in the dark. I then filtered it through muslin to remove any pith and it was fantastic.

I think mixed berries would be fab but remember that if you keep adding stuff to it, it will take longer until it's ready to drink. I'm sure you could top up the vodka but again I wouldn't leave it too long as you'll be waiting longer for your brew :)

I don't see why not - add more sugar, berries/currants and vodka as the fruit comes into season. I am sure I have seen a recipe like that somewhere and it is perfect for using up small batches of fruit. Shake well regularly and when the sugar doesn't precipitate out any more you can strain it. The leftover fruit will be very alcoholic, but would be lovely in a punch.

I use the "Basics" vodka and gin for all of my concoctions. There is no point in wasting the good stuff when it changes so radically anyway - add a little bit more sugar if you are afraid that it will be too harsh. But I only use good vodka in an emergency, and since discovering G&T, I won;t use good gin for anything other that it's proper purposes! :)
