I am trying to preserve my plums in vodka. I guess it's money saving as the vodka was given to me, the plums grew so I only need to buy the sugar. However, I have a problem in that the plums keep floating to the top of the liquid and are discolouring despite my shaking the jar twice a day. I cannot get a saucer in the top as the opening is too small. Will the plums still be edible? Any suggestion how I might rectify this please?
I made plum brandy last year and used the plums in my christmas cake . As you're trying to preserve the fruit, I'd guess that it would need to be stored in a dark place to stop discolouration. Maybe you have too much liquid if they keep floating to the top? If at all possible, try moving the plums into a smaller jar and just cover with the vodka? If it was me....I'd forget the preserved fruit idea and go for plum vodka:rotfl:
This link will take you to a rumtopf recipe which is more like the idea you actually want. Shaking the bottle twice a day really does point to a flavoured vodka."Who’s that tripping over my bridge?" roared the Troll.

Many thanks both. Yes, I think that plum vodka is what I'm after but, I'm sure the plums will be a very tasty by-product!:rotfl:
I did leave the stone in and the fruit whole, it has only been in a couple of days so I will remove it and start over.0 -
this happened to me as well in the first batch i made but i read somewhere if the fruit floats to the top so that its not covered in the liquid it oxidises so on making subsequent batches i used bottles with very narrow necks and cut the plums down to fit into the neck of the bottle and that seemed to work

Hi Pigeonpoo,
As your thread has dropped down the Old Style board I've add it to the main thread on making flavoured vodka to keep the suggestions together.
This thread may help too:
Fruits in alcohol - Pears in brandy, clementines in vodka etc

I've just tried to do an elderflower vodka. I left the flowers in only for 48 hours and they'd turned a horrible brown, the vodka is the colour of toilet water and it tastes vile. I have added sugar, but am loathed to add more as I don't want to through good stuff away
Anyone had any luck with elderflower vodka or should I just wait for the berries and hope they do better?Comping, Clicking & Saving for Change0 -
When would be the latest that I could make flavoured vodka for it to be ready on Christmas day? I was struggling to find the bottles that I want, 100ml ones. I have now seen some on Lakeland but have to wait for them to be delivered. I was hoping to do Werthers, Glacier mint and rhubarb and custard flavour. Thanks for any help.0

Sorry Minimad I do not have an answer for you - I have the same question!!
I wanted to make the blackberry vodka that was shown on Superscrimpers the other night. But I was going to use frozen Blackberries instead of fresh berries - does anyone think that will be a problem?

I think ones like blackberry will take much longer.
Werthers however is ready in a few days.
Add large bag of Werthers to a bottle of vodka and shake a few times a day for a few days.
