Couch to 5k Running - Part Three

Thanks - I have a laptop which says it does MP3 but that's a bit bulky to run with, mind you, I could put it in a rucksack, I see people running past my house with all the gear on and carrying a rucksack, maybe they're also carrying laptops.
My phone is a years old Nokia (5 plus) I can't face buying a new one because there seems to be so much technology around it scares me! All I ask from a phone is the ability to make phone calls but they all do so much else these days.
I will take the plunge and ask one of the youngsters at work - you never know, one of them may be wanting an upgrade and have sdomething second hand to sell!
I think there's a shop called Sports Direct (or similar) off the M25 in London Colney so I could drive over there at the weekend and see what they've got in the way of running shoes.
Thanks for the pointers

Er I think it may be quite difficult to run with a laptop, hope someone at work can help you with this and the phone thing, maybe they have an old mp3 player they could lend you until you know what you want? As for running shoes etc if you are actually in london colney can you get to St Albans cos there is a proper running shop there:
RunnersWORLD
(St. Albans)
23 The Quadrant
Marshalswick, St. Albans
Hertfordshire AL4 9RB
They could probably advise what sort of trainer you need (you do not have to buy them) whereas most staff in sports direct probably would not have a clue.
When are you intending to start? I am waiting for the my oncology appointment on Friday to make sure I am allowed to do it! Then may start next monday, anyone else wanting to start soon too??Courage is the art of being the only one who knows you're scared to death.

Ooh Oncology appointment sounds very worrying =- hope it turns out OK
I actually live nearer the Quadrant than London Colney so I could nip in there after the school drop off in the morning - I just have an awful feeling they will all "ROTFLMAO" (internet speak - I'm not a total techno moron) when I walk in the door which is why I tend to go for anonymous shops.
Tell you what, I'll pop my head round the door in the morning and if they look at me as if I am vaguely human I may even step inside.
If they look at me the way the staff in FCUK (Christopher Place) do when I walk in I'm straight out of the door and my running days are over before they have even begun. I'll do the 5K LHM run as a walk in my sensible lace up work shoes
I will report back tomorrow
I bottled talking to the youngsters today, they're all so cool and clever- on the whole though they're nice to me because I'm the boss!
Again, I will report back tomorrow
(It's a measured mile outside my house - out of front door, up to the lights, cross the road and down to the lights, cross the road then back up to my front door - that's why there are so many runners passing my house - must be 50 - 60 a day. Although obviously they don't all start outside my house, they must start in the car park down the road, If I do 26 laps it's a marathon!)
I think they carry weights or something (not laptops) in their rucksacks
Gulp

Hi Everyone, I'm starting C25K properly tonight at the gym, I was just wondering is it a run or a jog you do? And has anyone lost any weight upto now?
Well Done to everyone upto now!" :T"Friendship is certainly the finest balm for the pangs of disappointed love." Jane Austen.

Mrs mum, hope you got on ok at the shop and they treated you fairly. Don't worry about my oncology, I have already done the chemotherapy and had surgery 3 weeks ago but have to get my oncologist to clear me to run (rather than plod around!!) as I have yet to have my radiotherapy . It is really hard to get the courage up to do things sometimes (like walk into a running shop, if like me, you look nothing like a person who should be running) but this cancer business has taught me one thing, as I lost all my hair and then my nails (and then another bit too!), that now i say sod what everyone thinks and im gonna do it anyway
. So good luck with talking to the youngsters and the shop, I am sure you can do it.
Emsky* if you listen to the podcasts for the C25K you will find it is a mixture of running and walking, I think week one is something like 90 secs walk and then 60 secs run (not sure about the timings tho). It is so those of us who feel completely inept at any form of running don't do too much to start with!!!Courage is the art of being the only one who knows you're scared to death.

Mrs Mum - I hope you managed to get some advice in the running shop, If not when I started I went to the sports shop you mentioned and brought some Asics Gel trainers for not a lot because if you do not get on with running it means you haven't spent a lot of money on trainers you are not going to waste. If you buy a mp3 player that is also a clip you will then not need to buy something to put it in. HTH Good luck with starting out I am sure once you get started you will enjoy it
Emsky - How did you get on ?
Poly1 - When are you likely to get the go ahead to start? Did downloading the other one's solve your zip problems ? I like your attitude and with attitude like that you will be running 5km in no timeRestarting C25K in 2014 - Week 8 - 1/3 completed
Need to loose 25lb / 3lb lost so far0 -
Hi alliwantistosave yes thank you downloading them did work fine, sorry forgot to report back on that!
I will be seeing my oncologist tomorrow so will report back on whether she thinks it is ok to do or not. I am hoping to start next week if I get the go ahead, firstly so that I have some routine before the kids break up from school and secondly I want to start before my rads treatment because it makes you awfully tired but apparently with regular exercise it is not so bad, we shall see!!Courage is the art of being the only one who knows you're scared to death.

Hi Poly1 I downloaded it last week to see what it was like can't say I enjoyed the music :rotfl: How do I stop my iphone from removing a podcast after I've listened to it??
Hi alliwantistosave my iphone somehow deleted the first week, so I aimed for half an hour but managed an hour with 1 minute jogging at 7.0 and 2 minutes walking at 4.5 on the treadmill, I don't know if it's making it harder for myself or not but at 30 minutes I felt like I hadn't done enough... don't know how I'm a proper couch potato!" :rotfl:
Think I need new running shoes as I've developed 3 blisters in an hour last night and my shins and calves(sp) ache like mad when I'm jogging, any ideas??
How far is everyone along with it??"Friendship is certainly the finest balm for the pangs of disappointed love." Jane Austen.

Hi Emsky, I am afraid you will have to ask on the techie board about iPhones cos I really don't know anything about them, my phone is a nokia so completely different!! If you look on the cool running website there is a lot about injury but sounds like you may have something like Shin SPlints, "Shin splints are very common among beginning runners, whose enthusiasm for their new sport has over-stepped the limits of their legs. Take a look at your running program; you may be doing too much too soon." oh dear!Courage is the art of being the only one who knows you're scared to death.
