Because I am traditional in my thinking! Having the fathers surname should be for people who are married IMHO.

Im not married to my OH (yet) but engaged, our two children have his surname, i never even thought twice about it i knew they would have their fathers surname.

I think it was down to tradition, my parents werent married when i was born but i still had dads surname, and also that i plan on taking OH surname when we do tie the knot :D

Not married and not engaged? I'd choose Mothers name.

Married, or engaged to be married, I'd choose the Father's name.

I actually agree with this, if he wants the baby to have his name, then Marry You... simple...

If Not... the no baby surname... :D

Exactly, if he cannot commit to marriage, then likely the 'relationship' will not last! A fathers surname should be passed down through marriage, that's the tradition, a privaledge of marriage!

We have been together nearly 30 years but not married. Our kids have their father's surname. I have to spell mine every time I say it, and we didn't want them having to do the same. When the kids were younger I would often answer to Mrs ....(OH's name) rather than correcting anyone as I found people were embarrassed if I did.

you dont have to actually double barrel the surname just give the fathers surname before yours. that way - its there but it doesnt HAVE to be used! for example, if your surname is smith and dads is jones and you call the baby anthony paul jones smith. on forms his surname will still be smith. and his initials A P J. if in future he wants to double barrel it then that would be his legal name anyway! (a lot of posh names started that way).

    Father's surname.

Mainly because at the time, my surname was from a previous marriage and it would have been a huge no-no for my youngest to have carried my ex-husbands surname.:o

Before you go down the route of double-barrelled , mine (pre either marriage) had 18 letters. Try fitting that on a credit card strip :D. I was so relieved to get it shortened.
