Our DS has a double barrelled surname with my name first, his dads name second. Neither of us wanted to double barrel it, but we also couldnt agree on whos surname to give him. We are not married, if we do get married one day then my surname will be DS's middle name, and he will have just his dads surname.0

Hi i voted for fathers surname.
When my dd was born we weren't married but I wanted his surname. He's a wonderful man and is on the birth certificate so i was very happy for his name to be on there.
When my ds was born we were married so we all had the same surname.
We were already engaged when my dd was born and knew we'd be getting married it was just a matter of when not if. But saying that i hated it that me and my dd had different surnames and was VERY happy to change everything once married.
Be certain that you are choosing the name you want for the right reasons.
Good luck, enjoy the rest of your pregnancy0 -
I haven't read all the posts, but I think if you're in a long term relationship I'd give the father's surname. I was married when I had my children though.Payment a day challenge: £236.69

i have a son from a previos marraige and he has his surname , then i met someone else and had a baby who took his name, we then got married and i kepted my first married surname because my first didnt want to be the only one with a diferent name, this hasnt course any problems other than when i gave birth birth to my second boy the hospital called him by my first married name (as we wasnt married ) you just have to do what you think is best x0

I gave my DD her dads surname.... We got married after having her and subsequently divorced but shes still in touch with her dad and they both like that fact that she has his name (shes 18). I got remarried and in my experience you get called all manner of things by the childs schools.... Ive had Ms, Miss and Mrs with a combination of DDs surname, my maiden name and now married name. I just answer to anything.... At least they always get DDs name right! lolLight Bulb Moment - 11th Nov 2004 - Debt Free Day - 25th Mar 2011 :j0

I have been with my OH for 14 odd years, we are not married nor plan to get married, we have two children and they have my surname - the only person this annoys is OH's brother and OH has thought of changing his name to mine just to p1ss his narrow minded brother off ;-)0

I'm married but kept my maiden name. DH not fussed ...MIL is...oh the power!
Wasn't a problem and won't be until May. Think Bubba may get double-barrel as I'm not intending to change my name. I married DH because I love him and I've never felt obliged by him to change it. It works for us but not for all.

I often wonder how it works if someone with a double barrelled name marries someone else with a double barrell name? A quadruple barelled name? Where do you stop? As they are becoming far more common its more and more likely that couples will be faced with this issue, might be something to bear in mind.;)0

id double-barrel the surname sounds posh too lol0

To everybody who's posted that they'd give a child their father's surname but haven't stated why, could you possibly elaborate on your reasons?
I genuinely want to understand the thought process, is it really just down to tradition?0
