Good luck finding a modern bride who's changing her name because she wants to signify that she's now hubby's property!

I'll see your 7 letters and raise you my 9, that need spelling out every single time. I'm keeping it forever though. My first name also needs to be spelled out every time but no one suggests I should get rid of that at the first opportunity.
It seems there are an epidemic of two awful things that are happening in great numbers to women while men are getting off scott free:
1. Ugly, unpronouncable or hard to spell surnames
2. Bad relationships with fathers, to the extent that they are desperate to shed 'his' surname asap.
Now, we need to figure out how men are avoiding these pitfalls so we can stop them happening to women too!0 -

How does a surname prove paternity? DNA testing is more accurate if there is doubt.0 -

But they do! As long as the Dad is named on the birth certificate, then married or not, he has parental responsibility. The law changed in the early 2000s. Prior to this parents had to be married for Dad to have PR.I didn't realise men had no legal parental rights if they wern't married to the mother. Crazy.0 -
I know I'm reviving an old thread but here's another perspective...
I worked with a woman who wasn't married to her long-term bf of at least 10 years (now at least 20 years). She said marriage wasn't important to them. Fair enough. A valid and not uncommon view.
They had two children together. The kids both had the father's surname.
So did my colleague!
Her reasoning was that she wanted the same name as the rest of the family. I can't remember if her title was Miss, Ms or Mrs.

If both parents want their surname and won't back down, what would happen?0

I wasn't married when I had my 2 children, they took my OH surname because the intention was always to get married, then we would all be the same. It is annoying having a different surname to them but also quite common. We are married now so doesn't really matter anymore.
I do have a friend who was held for several hours for questioning at the airport when she took her little one on holiday without the dad because they had different surnames but also different colour skin so the authorities obviously had to check it out. Not a nice way to start the holiday though.
i've had this a few times going to the US and my daughter is the same colour as me.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
I deeply regret choosing the fathers name, I was bullied by him and his family because it was the right thing to do.
I have 2 children, eldest has my name, youngest has my ex's name, its not a nice feeling when you have to go to the doctors and reel off different surnames and now they are at the same school its even worse.
I will change it but might have to flee to canada after.0
