    Hi Pitlanepiglet,

I do as thriflady does and cut them into crouton sized cubes and open freeze before putting into bags or containers so that they don't stick together. You don't need to defrost them before frying, just use from frozen. There's an earlier thread with more suggestions that may help so I've added your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.

I don't open freeze first, I find they stay reasonably separate in a bag, and if they do clump, they are easy to break up;)

Thanks thriftady...I'll try that next time! I suppose it makes sense as I never open freeze breadcrumbs...a good bang against the garage wall usually does the trick with them. :D

  • If you have lots of them, you could go into business by packing them and selling them to Sainsbury's as 'ready cut soldiers for boiled eggs'.
'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp
  • Blitz them in the food processor and make breadcrumbs (freezable) or how about a nice Bread and Butter Pudding, Bread Pudding or Bread and Cheese pudding.
My lot love savoury bread and butter pudding with sausages and mushrooms
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Oh I'd never thought of Savoury bread and butter pud - as it's early I've not got my brain in gear - can you post the recipe? Please?
    THanks

    Savoury Bread and Butter Pudding

    • 6 – 8 slices of Bread preferably stale
    • Butter
    • 3 or 4 cooked and sliced sausages
    • Sliced mushrooms
    • ½ tsp Paprika
    • Salt and Pepper to taste
    • 2 eggs plus one yolk
    • 1 pint milk
    • Parsley to serve
Preheat the oven to 180C / Gas 4
    • Grease an ovenproof dish
    • Fry the onion and paprika until the onions are soft and see through
    • Butter the bread and cut into triangles or squares whatever you are comfortable with and place in the dish buttered side up
    • Sprinkle over a mix of onion sausages and mushrooms
    • Repeat steps 3 and 4
    • Mix the eggs, egg yolk, milk and seasoning together in a jug and pour over the bread, making sure you cover it completely.
    • Cover and leave for 30 mins to an hour in a cool place ( I cover mine with a plate and a weight so that the bread is completely submerged)
    • After soaking, put in the oven and bake for 30 – 45 mins or until the pudding is golden, puffed and the custard is set.
The beauty of this recipe is that you can adapt it to whatever your taste, mine like a little cheese sprinkled on top or make one using leftovers from a roast – etc or try bacon and cheese and tomatoes it is lovely.

    Hope you enjoy it x
