Would it work well in bread and butter pudding? Might make the kids one if it will?0

yep i actually think stale bread works better in bread and butter pudding than fresh does. but that might just be me!
i use my crusts to make mini pizzas aswell. grill the crust side, pop on some tomato puree, and little bit of oregano, some grated cheese, and whatever topping u fancy. then pop under the grill. yum! What matters most is how well you walk through the fire0 -
Hi all, I've had a search but can't find the info that I'm looking for...
Hubby has made 3 (yes count them ) dodgy loaves of bread this week. He claims it was the yeast....
I've cut the crusts off and made the inners into breadcrumbs for the freezer but now have a pile of crusts. Should I make these into breadcrumbs as well or bake them into croutons or do I just put them out for the birds?Piglet

I make breadcrumbs from the crusts or croutons. We had croutons from a crust with our lunchtime soup today -I fry them rather than bake them as they are much nicer that way.
You can freeze them cut into cubes ready for future croutons or as crumbs for bread pudding, treacle tart, duke pudding, meat loaves etc
Or tear into rough crumbs, fry in olive oil with some garlic and bsil and toss through pasta.0 -
I had this problem a couple of weeks ago and found a lovely recipe for Swedish applecake which was so good I'm going to make it again. I've just found the recipe which I scribbled down:
Swedish Applecake:
4 tbsp butter
1.5 cups apple sauce
2 cups bread or cake crumbs
1 tsp cinnamon
(I also added some brown sugar as I thought bread might not be sweet enough)
Melt butter add sugar and breadcrumbs and brown. In a greased loaf tin, layer crumbs with apple sauce, finishing with crumbs. Bake at 180 degrees for 30-40 minutes.
Very easy and delicious!somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's0 -
Thanks both, Pandora, strangely enough we've just eaten Brown Betty (from the Merry Berry book) which is similar to the recipe you've posted. We've got loads of apples in the garden and I picked some blackberries as well so we had a blackberry and apple version that was lovely.
I think I'll cut them into crouton sized pieces to be made into croutons at a later date. Thanks for that thriftlady.Piglet

Hi Pitlanepiglet,
I do as thriflady does and cut them into crouton sized cubes and open freeze before putting into bags or containers so that they don't stick together. You don't need to defrost them before frying, just use from frozen. There's an earlier thread with more suggestions that may help so I've added your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.

get a tube of tomato puree - and spread a little thinly over the crust (bread side not crust side). sprinkle on some grated cheese and mabye sliced sweet peppers/mushrooms . then toast them under the grill.
Tube of puree should last quite a whileDon't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0
