Again, i beg to differ, what you say is true, kind of, uk law also allows consumers to back up their material however they want, be it cd, dvd etc.

Its conflicting law and interests but neither have been proved or disproved so the whole thing remains rather confused. Ether way i wouldnt worry.

No it doesn't. The Law is very clear. I agree it's never been contested and in all likelyhood never will be or ever be used in court in this way, but that doesn't change the Law.

It's a commonly held belief you can backup anything you buy for personal use, but it's simply not true. Under UK law you have NO right to take a copy for any reason *UNLESS* specifically granted that right by the licence holder. Some computer programs give you that right but no CD, DVD does.

I know it's crazy, I said that a few posts ago but it's still true.

Look at the following links for the intellectual property Office (the old patent office)

Can I save copies of music CDs that I have purchased onto my computer?

No, this is not legal under UK law. There is no exception to copyright for the purpose of private copying. Permission would be needed from the copyright owner.

Can I copy a CD that I have purchased onto my MP3 Player?

No, this is not legal under UK law. There is no exception to copyright for the purpose of private copying. Permission would be needed from the copyright owner.
There are number of legal download websites available to the public that allow you to download music onto your MP3 player.

I have purchased a CD. Can I make a copy of this to play in my car?

Fair enough, i cant seem to find what i was thinking of to back me up, i realise what your on about is clear but i believe that there is another law, that allows the backing up of data you own, there having a conflict in the law, so the only way to tell would be to test it in court to see which takes precedence. Ive seen other members in the techie forum reference it but like i said, cant find it at the moment so cant really back myself up.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

If it's data you create or have purchased as data then your the licence holder and you can grant yourself the licence. There is a caveat there that you can purchase a licence to use a copy (as you generally do with software) rather than the data outright (ie you bought a program from it's creater including copyright, if if you had a bespoke app written for you).

Anythying you don't own you can't. All CD's DVD/Books say who owns the copyright and it's almost certainly not you...

The question is do you own the data or do you have a licence to use it. (and in this context it's really a licence to play the CD)?

And Yes I know I break the Law, my Cd's are on my media server so I can play them aound the house. The Laws as it stands is way out of date with what we use media for these days but there seems little will to change it at the moment, even though the music companies say they'll never got for people who puyt their cd's to MP3 players.

gjchester is correct. There is no legalright in the UK to backup CDs and DVDs. In the the use they have a 'fair use' policy which permits it, we don't.

However even the BPI agree that this situation is ridiculous with MP3 players being so prevalent nowadays and would like the law changed to allow CDs to be copied to MP3 players.

So although it is illegal in reality you're never going to be prosecuted for it so long as you don't start selling or giving away copies.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

I sincerely hope you are correct about launch date

I've been sitting waiting patiently for about three months awaiting news so i can buy a 4/HD or a 3GS new at a lower price.

What are the chances you could end up with egg on your face with regards launch/sale date.

Not wishing to rain on your parade but it's not a shoe in is it

    I hope your right though

    Best wishes

Still got my chips on the 18th though.
