  • Nope, Apple are allowed to set the price of their handset as they wish as they are the manufacturer, they can also choose who to supply to. If someone wants to do cheap tariffs they can choose not to supply them.

Competition Commission would come in where another smartphone company wanted to buy out apple or visa versa giving them a greater smartphone market share, or if retailers were doing price fixing between themselves.

The IPhones cost alot to develop and they are a premium handset, they will not be cheap to buy.

Vodafone launched the HTC HD2 with a lot of publicity as THE handset to get. Within weeks they dropped it down to being business only and launched the 3GS as THE handset. Voda customer services all but admitted that Apple insisted they drop the competition if the wanted to get the 3GS.

Which in itself is fine, but demonstrates that networks don't have as much latitude as you might think. BTW the price-fixing is done by the networks, not Apple. All these high end smartphones cost a lot to develop and retail. For some reason though networks manage to charge far more for the handset on contract, AND charge more for the contract vs what you pay for the same package on any other handset?

How and why? Because they can get away with it. When you have an endless supply of punters desperate for the shine shiney why not rip them off? I think this video on YouTube explains the public mindset which allows them to cash in so successfully.

Probably not and I wonder if many iPhone 4 owners will care?

I had a chat with a few iPhone 4 owners over the weekend and they all can reproduce the issue and have either bought 'bumpers' for their phones or already had a case. They don't seem to be that fazed by what is looking like a pretty poor design flaw.

I would be somewhat livid and especially as it increasingly looks the case that Apples explanation about signal software problems doesn't seem to hold up.

I just don't 'get' cases for iPhones. I single out this device particularly, because it's heavily marketed as being aesthetically brilliant. Yet I see them sporting the most ugly, bulky cases because everyone is terrified of scratching/dropping the device.

Well if you think about it in reality, most phones you get today are not to many people cheap, so they go out and find a case they like to protect it note I said they like not what anyone else thinks, afterall to spend that much money on any phone and then not protect it is sheer stupidity.

I understand why people would want to protect their devices (mostly the screen from my POV) and good skins or screen film protectors are fine as long as they don't hinder the touch experience.

However, the irony grates on me that people buy into a 'great looking' device but this then disappears behind an ugly case. I guess I expect a 'premium' product to include a protective skin/screen film as bundled accessories.

Again it is your view that it is an ugly case. I like the iphone for what it does, I think the iphone itself looks terrible, in fact I don't think there is a single phone about atm that looks good, so I bought a nice embossed leather toff luv case, now I think it looks great. You see that is because it is MY phone and I decided it looked better in the case, I don't care what anyone else thinks and to me the case is far from ugly. Oh and it in no way hinders the touch experience. As for cases etc being bundled with phones, I take it you don,t remember the terrable cases that came with phones in the 90's and up to a couple of years back, manufacturer supplied cases no thanks they are ugly.

My guess is you're probably in the minority regarding the aesthetics. After all Apple say it looks amazing :-; Despite disliking most other aspects of iPhone 4, I think they do look nice and 'clean', although a little practicality is lost by having a single hardware button. You pays your money and takes your choice with regard to device and accessories. However, I'm yet to be convinced about the iPhone being a 'premium' product (other than the price!)

I don't want a case included, but maybe a protective skin/screen film as bundled accessories.
