Are retail stores such as O2, CPW, P4U offering the PAYG or any sim free handsets tomorrow, or will it be contract phones only?

To add to what Oscar has said:

Orange have announced their PAYG prices and have not yet indicated that there are any shortages or delays (for either PAYG or any shortages in general).

Vodafone do not currently sell the 3GS on a PAYG basis so I doubt they will. They have not announced PAYG handset pricing either.

Three and T-Mobile have yet to announce prices and availability.

Tesco - I have been told that Tesco will not be selling the iPhone 4 on PAYG at the moment. Their website does now show the new 3GS 8GB as £385 (same price as Orange) but it is currently out of stock. Based on this I would expect the Tesco iPhone 4 price to be the same as Orange (when and if it does start selling the iPhone 4).

CPW - one store told me that they have been told to direct people to Apple if they want a PAYG handset as they have been instructed not to sell PAYG.

The problem is that there is a major shortage of iPhones so there is no real incentive for the networks or retailers to offer PAYG at this time. Based on the above, Orange seems the best bet (but I wouldn't be too hopeful).

Thanks to Oscar and DVS for the replies.

I've been holding out to see what Three and Tesco would do, I'm surprised they (especially Three) are leaving it so late to reveal their hand.

I have a 3GS so I've also been waivering between keeping that and selling it to get an i4.

The Orange PAYG route is interesting. I might take a chance with the store tomorrow. Will this likely be locked to Orange? I'm off work and it's pay day so I'm tempted.

After reading much on the subject I presume it'd be straightforward to unlock the i4 in the next few days? I'd need to as I have an o2 contract until January.

I wouldn't hold your breath on Three, after the damage caused by not allowing its existing customers to upgrade to the Desire when launched it has laid out its stall that they will look after customers due an upgrade first. Probably why they are in no hurry to announce pricing and also they probably don't have a large stock due to being low down the food chain compared to O2, Voda and Orange

If bought from the Orange shop it will almost certainly be locked. Only Orange can unlock the phone if you are not jailbreaking your phone. Most operators require you to have the phone for a year before they will unlock. So Orange may not be an option for you.

If Tesco do sell the iPhone 4 on PAYG, you will be able to use that on O2 but as I said previously, it doesn't look likely that they will be offering the iPhone 4 at launch on PAYG. (If they do offer the iPhone 4, double check that they are still locked to O2 and not just Tesco - they always have been O2 locked previously).

Apple will be selling their phones SIM free but I'm not sure what they will do if you want to buy the phone on a PAYG basis (whether they will put a lock on it or just leave it SIM free. Stock will be limited at Apple stores though.

Hi Guys – I know you’re all keen for an update on where we are.

Over the last couple of days you’ve been quite rightly taking us to task about why our price plans for iPhone 4 haven’t seen daylight yet.

So that you don’t spend another day relentlessly checking three.co.uk, I wanted to manage your expectations that our pricing won’t be shared today. There are a couple of things still to iron out at our end.

The good news is that pricing for iPhone 3GS 8GB and iPhone 3GS 32GB will be revealed tomorrow morning. We’ll be able to let you know what our iPhone 4 pricing is soon.

There’s been lots of to-ing and fro-ing behind the scenes here at Three, and it’s been our number one priority to make sure that we deliver you market leading plans. We hope that’s what you’ll think we’ve achieved. I can assure you that we’re as keen as you to get them out there.

Those of you that registered for iPhone 4 on Three at the start will have received either an email or a text from us. If you were one of the first existing customers to register and you’re within your upgrade window, you’ll have the first priority on stock. We’re working with Apple to understand what will be available when so that we can keep you informed.

We’ll be in touch to let you know dates and what the next steps are soon. Our call centre is very busy (as you can imagine!), and our advisors really won’t be able to tell you anything further at this stage.

I hope that helps to provide you with a bit of an update.

    Thanks for your patience,

    Nigel
