Yep - don't try to do them all. Just think of one area that you might like to work on. At this precise minute, I am mighty riled up by a certain small group of people who I won't mention who have seriously dragged down my score in one area that yesterday, I rated highly. But I won't let it phase me, cos I know really, that it's temporary! So my focus is stil, still, still career!

Gemmzie - I see from your list that in Health you scored it at 5, but you say you're only just about 1 pound overweight. I find that quite interesting, since 1 pound isn't a huge amount in itself to impact so greatly on your score. Is it the actual overweigghtness (yep, no such word, I know!!) that's dragging your score down, or your perception of what you look and feel like, because you're 'overweight' even by such a tiny amount?
I saw an advert for WeightWatchers last night, the one with the little helpers on it, and the woman was horrified when she stood on the scales and she was just over 10 stones, until she realised her little helpers were on there with her. Once they jumped off, the scale swung back way below. It really cheesed me off. 10 stones, unless you are really short, is a 'healthy' weight to be. I weigh more than that because I am muscular. According to BMI, I am overweight. Thankfully, the health screening I had last week doesn't use that measure any more because it doesn't take account of muscularity (muscle weighs more than fat) or bone structure, but used a waist/hip ratio instead. Weight of itself is a relatively pointless measure, unless you take into account other factors in your life - your food intake (amount and nutritional value), exercise, mental well-being, food tolerance/intolerance and so on.
And no, I'm not perfect. Just way older than you (I think!) and learned a few lessons the hard way!
So try not to be too hard on yourself. A pound is nothing. I bet your OH thinks you look fabulous.
Oh, and I hate to fail too. Dont we all....
So, there are some things you can't do anything about - living in the same house as your brother, not having a mortgage and saving for a wedding (yet). But you are on an OU course AND working (it's hard work isn't it?!) and OU can seem to go really slow at times (our tutor had a breakdown in the middle of our course, which was a nightmare for everyone, mostly him). You have a fab relationship by the sound of it as well.
Why not try attacking your fitness by going out for walks with your OH in the evening? That gets you away from your brother and gets you some exercise as well. My friend who's a personal trainer tells me that walking is the best exercise there is as it gets the lymphatic system moving - the immune system for our body which strangely, has no pump (unlike our arteries/veins). Dry skin brushing does the same thing too - do that before your shower and you'll have lovely soft skin (brush towards the heart).

Hi everyone, I'd love to join, this is quite well timed as I have already started doing some work in this area... I will have a good think later and reread the homework bits.
I have been following this thread avidly- you all sound lovely and it's great how honest everyone is being with themselves, and how supportive of each other.
Krisp- I don't think personally that the BMI charts are very accurate, as they don't take into account that some people are more muscular than others so will weigh more even though they have lower fat levels.0 -
Well I sorted through my stitching floss over the weekend and I think I need to stitch a load of my charts rather than kits
, 11.5 boxes of floss *ooops*!, so frantic stitching is happening which a) I enjoy (so fun!) and b) is what I am classing as work (to give some structure to my days) - so guess what I am doing all this week :rotfl: Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons, for thou art crunchy and good with catsup

Krisp - I think it's that I'm unhappy about my weight by about 20lbs. My diet has changed drastically in the past few years, and I'm worried that borderline overweight is where my body is naturally going to be now
That impacts on money as I can't afford new bigger clothes and drags my wellbeing down because I feel rubbish when my clothes don't fit.
Until a week ago, I would have said I eat a pretty good diet but using a calorie/nutrition tracker on my iPhone shows a different story. I don't eat enough fat or get enough carbs most days, I'm also lacking calcium, iron and vitamin A. Oops!
You're definitely right about exercise, I'm going to start parking the car further from work so I have to walk everyday. I spend most of my working day sat down and I think that's made a big difference to my health.
The other drags on health, I can't change at the moment; whiplash, useless main hand and IBS issues. So I'll concentrate on the ones I can change.

It's funny that you mentioned not eating enough fat. That's a major mistake that many people make. The body needs fat, but if we opt for low fat foods, as we're encouraged to do, then the body forgets how to burn it. These low fat foods tend to be full of sugar, or sugar replacements, which the body uses as a very quick energy source. Then, when we eat fat as well, the body finds it harder to process the fat, so stores it. The modern diet industry (and yes, that's what it is) is rubbish.
I really doubt you're stuck at the higher end of your acceptable weight range. I thought that too. And at almost 40, I found that it wasn't true at all! I cut out bread, pasta, rice, milk and cheese and cut back on all sweets and biscuits for 2 months and then reintroduced the odd sweet, biscuit, the milk and cheese, but kept away from the bread, pasta and rice totally.
Interestingly, I found that I have a gluten intolerance as well as some other random food intolerances that were causing me to be overweight and also give me chronic IBS. Today, I suffered big time with my new food to avoid - green cabbage. I cooked it yesterday evening to go with dinner, woke up this morning feeling a little ropey, but by midday had the usual excrutiatin sudden pains that took me off to the ladies to writhe around sweating until I was sick. It was awful, because I haven't had it for months. I left a mystery outline of sweat on the floor (like in a murder case where the body was found!!).
Was sent home early, came to bed with a hot water bottle, fybogel, ibuprofen and self-pity. I've been amusing myself with Debt Free Diaries, but I'm shattered and really sore
ah well.
Anyway, well done on deciding to do the walking. I'm in an office too - it doesn't help, does it?! But do have a think about the food intolerance issue. The usual suspects are gluten and milk to start off with.

As for the BMI - it's pants, as my friend the PT and nutrition expert keeps on telling me. My OH had a friend who was in the RAF Regiment who was a perfect human specimen - the BMI chart classified him as obese. Go figure.....!

How right you are, gluten intolerant but refuse to be tested as it involves eating gluten-laden foods for six weeks and lactose intolerant too but seem to be one of the lucky few who can have lactose enzymes and eat products as long as I don't have them too often. There's definitely a further intolerance sniffing around though, I've had sore sinuses for a few weeks and I'm taking the usual hayfever meds which normal stop it.
I used to eat a no-meat diet, lots of salad, lots of fish but reintroduced meat last summer (due to craving chicken) - I think the change in diet has confused my metabolism somewhat. But I have no idea how to fix it!
Funnily enough, the last time I was really unwell with IBS, I lost two stone. I hope you feel better soon, a nasty bout is never fun
