Help..Faulty memory slot?!?...Buyer wants a refund but could easily swap memory!!!

Last Sunday I have sold on Ebay a Siemens 256Mb Ram 133Mhz SDRAM PC133 SODIMM 144 PIN memory slot.

Before this memory module was on my laptop and it was perfectly working...Just to be sure the same day before sending it to the buyer
I went to a specialized shop to test the module and they tested with the official memory testing machine...

I have a proof of testing that the memory module was perfectly working the 21st of August, the day I have posted the memory slot to my buyer... Everything was fine, immediate positive feedback from the buyer but suddenly after days (exactly today!!) I have received an e-mail from this person saying that the memory is faulty. This is what he wrote in his e-mail:

hi, the memory module is faulty...block errors on bootup..so i'd like to return the item for a refund, where would you like the item sent? thanks

I am very suspicious about this as this person is working at the University and exactly in a computing department and I am sure he can have access to many memory modules and can easily swap a Siemens memory module with another Siemens module...

This is quite serious problem as the memory slots look more or less the same...I have all the information about the memory module I have sold, serial number etc. I have the photo of the memory slot I have posted in my listing on Ebay...thankfully the picture is very clear and you can read all the information.

I need your help here: Is there any way I can be sure he is saying the true or not...

Is there any way I can recognize my memory slot?!?! And be certain about it?!?! I am wondering how can I resolve this issue...this is very serious as these memory slots are quite expensive and at the end I loose the money and I have back a faulty memory slot which is not the one I have send to the buyer in the first place...

I was quite sure something like this could easily happen on Ebay...Please help me...What can I do?!?! There is a way I am covered as a seller...this is the first time I am selling in Ebay...and I am quite convinced this person thinks he can easily win with me...

I really need your help...Thank you Liz

    i cant really help.
i would advise people who sell items that are easily swapped to always take a note of the serial numbers, or imei numbers on mobiles.

and also if possible secretly mark your item so you know if it gets returned you can identify it as yours!

There are lots of information on the memory slots...there are same white labels with SS number and barcode as well...I have a picture...I have contacted the Company as well to see if they tell me how to recognize my memory with another one...

However I am sure it is quite unlikely that the memory slot pass the test and they said it was working perfectly and after 2 days it is faulty...

Yes but I have given all the information and I think this is quite unlikely as the are working in an Computing Department of the University...they should know things like this...

Also they gave me a positive feedback saying everything was fine and perfect...so I think they swap it so they have a quite costly memory slot without paying any money...

And if in the case they have bought the wrong memory slot now maybe now it is faulty because of their mistake...I do not seriously what to think...

I work in a computing school of a university and I can tell you with confidence that just because he works in a computing department doesn't mean he is competent with computers, treat him like anyone.
I deal with some professors that don't realise the the reply all button in email sends the email to everyone the orignal was sent to (I'm not exagerating there) I'm more technically minded than alot of them and I just work in Admin.

Treat all people like the know nothing, 9 times out of 10 you'll be right
    Nice to save.

I will be very happy to post the picture of the memory but how can you do that...I have look around for the attachment...can I give you the Ebay listing id ...so you can check it there

However if you fit the wrong memory type in the wrong laptop you could make the memory faulty?!?!

Let me know about the attachment...few posting for me I do not know how to do it...Thank you for your support you are great!!!!!

I would tell him tough luck, you tested the memory and it worked, he left you postive feedback so he must have been happy with the goods.

Yes...this is quite strange...it was so happy...and he left me straighaway a feedback"++quick and easy"...that is quite strange...you first test the memory on your latptop and then if it working you leave a feedback only then or if it not working you contact the seller and tell him/her about the problem...

Maybe this is the way he is doing things...he leave you a positive feedback so you leave him a positive feeback and after 2 days he say the item is faulty...so he keep the perfect memory slot and swapt with the faulty one...maybe he bought mine as he could clearly see all the information from my picture of the Ebay listing...he saw that it was exactly similar to the faulty one he has...I do not know maybe it is too much...but you never know...you could never be careful enough...Liz

I would tell him tough too! However if he persists you could tell him: If he was to returns it (at his cost) you would then check out the numbers etc are the same as when you sent it. You would also take it back to the shop where you tested it before it was sent and see what they say - test it again and see if they can shed any light on the matter. He would not be refunded until the fault was proved and even then you wouldnt refund the return postage.

  • Did you put in your listing to ensure compatibility with your machine before purchasing? I to have sold ram that worked to have it returned as faulty only to find that is was working. In this case I got the buyer to cover my fees for their mistake. I do think you have the option of supplying a replacment over a refund ( if you are a business )
