toilet rolls ? best way of saving

we usually use value toilet roll (after all it does just go in the loo) but last lot we brought when i moved was 16 rolls of panda paper as my 2 year old son calls it for £5.00 (its the brand with a panda on packet)
i go through more when ds3 (nearly 2) choses to take the roll for a walk, but generally get through 1 a week for me and 2 of the boys
i can get 12 packs of 4 value loo rolls usually for what i spent on 16 rolls of branded stuff, im sure my value would still last longerDFW nerd club number 039'Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts' :money: i will be debt free aug 2010

real money saving would be using newspaper torn into squares. like we used to do in the old days.
When i was growing up one of the ladies in the bottom flat (we lived in blocks 3 storys high) had newspaper in her bathroom (this was in the 80s/ early90s)
i do wonder if anyone would still do this? bit too extreme for me though (and newspaper would be a nightmare in the drains)DFW nerd club number 039'Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts' :money: i will be debt free aug 2010

I always use sainsburys basic stuff 12 rolls for £1.12. Does the job and I definately dont think they are false economy.0

I remember my grandad having ripped up squares of newspaper on a nail in his loo (usually if he had run out of loo roll). But then when all his kids were at home there was 12 of them so I guess the "waste not want not" element was ingrained.0

absolutely agree, we do get through twice as much as 12 rolls
of more expensive brands but then its comparing spending 2.24 with around 4 pounds so still much cheaper even if you get through more rolls.0 -

My sil had to do this one week (1980's), but I don't think she chopped the newspapers small enough, because it didn't flush very effectively. She was horrified that things had got so bad, but she still didn't learn.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0 -
I buy the chapest I can and if it disintegrates then I will go for the next cheapest. Usually asdas/sainsburys economy are good enough.
When I was a child my mother cut newpaper into squares and hung it on a nail on the wall in the outdoor loo so any toilet rolls seem posh and expensive seems ridiculous extravagance.0 -
Home Bargains do 18 Novelle for £2.99 and I find that it does the job satisfactorily! I hate spending money on something that is literally 'going down the drain'! (also save my no 1s for the compost)0

Toilet rolls don't last 5 mins in my house, the kids use way too much each time, because they just pull the end and take whatever comes from the roll. To help this problem, squeeze the roll before putting it on the holder, as the tube is no longer round it stops the roll spinning out of control with a small pull and therefore not so much paper is used. this also works with kitchen rolls.0

Thank you, good tip0
