I love the way any edge the Desire has over the iPhone becomes a feature only for 'power users', but anywhere the Apple is considered to be better is vitally important to the majority of people. If removable batteries and memory card slots are so esoteric, why does just about every non-Apple phone, DAP and camera on the market have them?

As for the OLED screen on the Desire, I used mine for a week by the pool in Gran Canaria a few weeks back and tweaking the brightness up a tad made it perfectly usable in bright sunlight. As for the iPhone not 'needing' a full USB or Bluetooth implementation, well, I suppose that'll be in the same way that the previous iPhones didn't need 3G or cameras? ;)

If removable batteries and memory cards are vitally important, why do people buy devices without them by the millions, and why do you never see anyone taking them out if they are removable (other than to restart a crashed device!)? I can almost guarantee that the vast vast majority of people (I.e., average users) stick the bundled memory card and battery in the phone and never take them out again. As such, a battery and memory you can't remove is essentially irrelevant for most people

OLED is still not as good as the iPhone in sunlight. And to call your bluff, the first iPhone DID need 3G as it's patently ridiculous to have an internet centric device stuck at dial-up like speeds. However, there is little practical use for full Bluetooth and USB support as the things you'd be doing if the iPhone had those features can already be done anyway by a different means. What killer thing do you think everyone will suddenly be doing if the iPhone did support full Bluetooth and USB? I bet you can't think of a thing, or can only think of something that would be of interest to power users.

The Desire does not support Flash yet as you need the 2.2 Froyo update, which has not been released by HTC yet - apoligies, looks like the Desire does have Flash support - must be in cahoots with Adobe for that! The processor in the iPhone is backed up by a fairly meaty graphics chip, which the Desire lacks. This actually makes the iPhone a more powerful device.
As well as being much faster that the iPhone's processor, the 1.0GHz Snapdragon processor in the Desire has graphics hardware built in.

Millions more buy devices with both. Why would manufacturers other than Apple bother to design products thus and why is the aftermarket for memory cards and additional/replacement batteries so huge if the vast majority never use them?

Sorry, but that's just not true.

It does, but it's nowhere near the power of the iPhone GPU. So whilst the 3GS has a slower CPU, it has a better GPU which is used to make the iPhone OS sleek and appealing, as well as giving it a massive edge in 3D gaming, although I don't think that's terrifically important.

I think we will see a big sway towards more devices with fixed memory and batteries as manufacturers finally realize they are little wanted features. There are a many number of devices now with fixed internal memories, and we are starting to see devices with fixed internal batteries now too (Nokia N8). Believe me, the trend will be towards what the 'average' consumer wants, not what the geeks want.

So everyone who has bought a Desire is a geek? Obivoulsy no-one want sot customise their iPhone, that's why there is so much info around on jailbreaking them.

How anyone can claim that iTunes is a benefit is beyond me it's an awful piece of software. perosnally I've never found it htat hard to drag and drop music to and from an MP3 player or phone. I can se ehow having it synch automatically is of some benefit, but iTunes really is horrible.

There's one area where Android is well ahead and that's in the way it synchs with the 'cloud'. Cloud computing is the way forward and Android is well ahead of iPhone OS in that respect.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Again, think about the user - is the average Joe going to know where and how to drag and drop content to their device? Syncing to the cloud is available on the iPhone via MobileMe, but you do have to pay for it. Google also has no way of automatically syncing with your Outlook contacts. Bizarrely, it can sync calendars, just not contacts.

Really? I think we'll see (and are seeing, particularly but not only with cameras) a sway away from fixed memory (perhaps zero) as people realise that card memory is cheap and easy to add. And what is the possible advantage of a fixed battery over a removable one?

Yes. Most average users already do so with their PCs and laptops.

Better build quality as you don't need a removable panel. Even Nokia cited that as the reason for the N8!

Hmmmm, I'm not so sure. It's very easy to think that what you know is what everyone else knows.
