Ordered Iphone, think I've made a mistake?

Thanks all, think I've made up my mind, and will go with the desire.
I ordered via O2 online upgrades, and the iphone is due to be delivered today, so will cancel and go with the desire instead.
I had no choice but to order as my current phone has died a death, so need to get a phone asap, and my upgrade date has just passed, so really couldn't wait much longer!
Thanks for the advice!:beer:0 -
First Froyo may never reach some phones. Just because the OS makers releasae an upgrade there is no guarantee the phones vendors will push it out. Open source means the phones vendor may have tweaked the OS and unless they tweak an update it may never work on a phone.
In terms of numbers it's not really a fair comparison.
Apple make iPhones, and RIM Make blackberrys, but there are many vendors of Android phones out there, all with different capabilities. Not all Andrid phones are advanced touch screen models some are really basic phones.
Comparing them like this is like saying there are more Ford cars on the road, followed by all the Far Easter brands, then Vauxhall.
If you see on magazine websites, they have news as of yesterday that HTC has unofficially said they will release the froyo update for the desire on June 23. I was talking just about the desire.
since the op intends to use the phone for internet and not for music, the desire would beat the iPhone hands down in terms of websites downloading speeds and general experience.
It is a gadget afterall, I have nothing against the iPhone. If i thought it was better I would have bought it instead of buying 2 desires this month. I tried friends iPhone 3gs before I bought the desire. Some die-hard iPhone/ MAC fans I know have bought the legend now for their kids as they think that HTC is better now. But that is just anecdotes as every individual will have their own preferences.
I compared the facilities with blackberry as well before deciding on the desire. I dropped plans on buying a netbook as have no need for that after buying the desire. Plus have not had the need to buy a single app yet as the many free ones were good enough for me.bubblesmoney :hello:0 -
I think gjchester was referring to the HTC Desire, but across the various networks. If they are not running the vanilla version of Android then you'll have to wait for the networks to officially release the OS with their tweaks & apps inplace, or go the unofficial route to upgrade.
The Desire can be had for £25pm, so why spend £35? Unless you really need to extra minutes. Much cheaper than the iPhone. iPhone is good for killing time with its vast number of apps, but only worthwhile if you are going to jailbreak it (and void the warranty).0 -

It's down to personal preference, I disagree that the desire is a better experience.
I'm not an Apple fan, I don't even have an iPhone or a mac, but the fact they control the iphone hardware/software/interface really shows. It's smooth and slick to use.
There are too many variations in the hardware and the "skins" in android to give it that consistancy across phones. Yes you can argue that this freedom is a good thing, but it comes at the expense of quality of experience. Think Atari and Nintendo back in the 80's, anyone could make and release a Atari 2600 title and there were some really junk titles towards the end, Nintendo had a QA department that would not permit poor quality releases and had far less junk titles on the NES.
With regards to Android upgrades I think they will be hit and miss. As I said not only does the Supplier (Google) have to upgrade the OS, but then HTC need to upgrade the next layer (ie the bits with Sense UI) and then the Carriers need to customise it. Historically it has never regularly happened. My old Motorola SLVR phone had the ability to be upgraded, but never did, and I've never heard of a Nokia getting an upgrade outside of returning it to a service centre for another fault.
HTC has still not upgraded the hero or the magic yet, and both have been out longer than the Desire. HTC promised these 2Q 2009 but the upgrades still are not out there.
Sony Ericcson say they will take the X10 to 2.1 soon, but then again as I've said my SE X1 was promised an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5 and then they decided not to bother.
Motorola are promising an update to the Droid soon, but no news of any other phone.
I've a suspision that the flagship phone of each range will get an upgrade or two then be dropped, remember the lifespan of each gadget as top do is about 3 months, then the vendors move on and there will be another "must have" phone. At least Apple seem to support there phones for longer.0 -

Actually, I think it is a very fair comparison. I'm not aware of any Andorid phones which aren't smartphones and the fact that Apple restrict their OS to their own products is a decision which may allow Google to dominate the Smartphone market in exactly the same way Microsoft came to dominate the PC market. There's love in this world for everyone. They've unofficially said end of June. Key being unofficially
That unofficially source also said the Magic and Hero would get the upgrade to 2.1 at the end of q4 2009, then 1q 2010 and still haven't got it.
I'm not saying it won't arrive, in fact the desire is new and being pushed so may get it first, it's just that once a product ships vendors tend to close the door on it and move on.0 -
Right, well I have now cancelled my Iphone, and the HTC will be winging its way to me. I really wanted an 18 month contract as opposed to 24, so have gone for that @ £35 a month, which I am happy with.
I think I've done the right thing now!0 -

I agree that FroYo won't reach all phones but HTC have confirmed that both the Desire and Legend will get it. I'd assume that the very latest phones like the Pulse Mini and Wildfire will as well.
The iPhone interface may be slick but so is Sense on the Desire and I really don't care if other Android phones are different as I'm not going to buy them. :rotfl:It's my problem, it's my problem

One point you don't have to wait for the carrier branded version you can just install the standard HTC ROM which will debrand your phone, which is regarded by most peopel as a good thing. It's my problem, it's my problem
