One point you don't have to wait for the carrier branded version you can just install the standard HTC ROM which will debrand your phone, which is regarded by most peopel as a good thing.
i had previously confirmed this from three network, their blog seemed to suggest that one could upgrade direct from htc website for desire upgrades. so the same should work for other networks too.

I got mine on T-Mobile but it's unlocked and has no branding so I'll just get the update from HTC as soon as they release it.

Maybe, previously although there was new firmware for my motorola it would not take it as it was not from the carrier.

You also need to consider if you need to "hack" it in anyway to get the firmware on the phone, and the phone breaks then you'll get no warranty support. I can attest from personal experience thats the case with Vodafone. My X1 had a physical fault but because the firmware was not the Vodafone supplied one they would not repair it at all.

That may void the supplier's or manufacturer's warranty, but not their obligations under the SOGA. Goods must be fit for purpose and of reasonable quality. Reflashing the firmware does not cause physical defects.

I agree but short of taking them to the small claims Vodafone would not touch it. The comment was that they could not be responsible for it as it was modified from as it was supplied. You could argue after 20 months then it's coming to the end of it's typical life given most phones are changed on a 18 month contract.

Life is too short. They gave me a free months rental when I complained, I sold it on as not working to a recycling company, and I have my PAC waiting to see how much the Iphone 4 is before I decide Iphone or Nexus or Desire.

I wouldn't need to hack it. The phone has a 2y warranty from HTC (I have an 18 month contract) so installing a HTC update from HTC website wouldn't void any warranty. The HTC website also gives carrier specific update for various phone. See https://www.HTC.com and support section for the phone you are interested in.

That may be different to SonyErricson. The SE (and the Motorola before it) would not load the stock makers firmware it would only accept a update that was approved (read stuffed up) by Vodafone.

If the carrier never releases an update (regardless of the maker doing so) then the phone may not accept a stock firmware image without hacking. I understand you need to root the Desire to get it to take the new image, and I thought that the root tool is not made by HTC. That change would be enough to deny warranty, it certainly was on the X1.

I think the OP is Bally mad to pay *more* for an HTC Desire which is worth *less* than an iPhone 3GS 16GB! That's madness for you :P.

It certainly won't be worth less in a months time when the 4g one comes out! ;)
  • I have to say I dont think you have made a mistake at all....

    HTC: Great phone
    Iphone: Great phone

you have upgraded to a great phone fact, there is no need to feel like you have made a mistake.
a mistake would be getting an N80 or some other old phone stuffed with problems.

Dont go round thinking you have made a mistake. By no means have you.
If you got a HTC you would want a iphone, Iphone you want a HTC.

    enjoy your new handset
