another word of warning...don't rely on these for storing important course work, photo's etc, they are fine for portable storage , moving between Pc's etc but please always back important stuff to CDR's as soon as possible

when these fail there is very little chance of data recovery

What's a flash pen drive when it's at home?
It's looks a bit like a key you plug into the side of your computer. It acts as an extra memory both for saving files and to allow you to transfer them across to another computer with ease. QUOTE]....

It really acts as extra storage (portable storage).......not memory.

Technically Martin is right, and the common interpretation that you found misleading is wrong.

Memory can be volitile, non-volitile, tape, disk, disc, pigeons, random or linear access.

All RAM is memory, some memory is RAM, USB Drives, ipods, or tape drives.

  • Price per Gb is interesting, would you pay 25 quid per Gb, instead of 15?

For just 10 quid extra a Gb you could get http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000EWTBSG/sr=1-1/qid=1156508221/ref=sr_1_1/202-0068687-4782277?%5Fencoding=UTF8&s=electronics&v=glance

(of course that is buying 6gb)

The point being, as memory is cheap, the casing and other things (screen software) absorb the cost.

before spending 30-50 quid on 2-3gb of storage you might look for a more functional device that can view photos / video from your camera.

If you bought a nano - you can mod it to play games and video by installing linux (easy to do, and has a great hold-em poker game!) (which helps swallow the financial pill of those apple devices)

And you can carry gb's of files....
  • I'm a fan of 7dayshop.com and the 1Gb stick now 10.49. The reason the £3.95 P&P doesn't worry me is that being a savvy saver I group my purchases and they have so many other bargains that I always need such as films, batteries or Epson inkjet cartridges for 99p (beat that?) thus the £3.95 is spread over multiple items. I once bought re-usable cameras, film and batteries from them for less than the cost of disposables. I used them for the tables at a wedding then gave them away as presents too! If we do our sums we can save loads!

Also, my brother in Law inadvertently put his 1Gb stick through a full automatic wasing machine cycle with no loss of function - just dried it out and it works like new!

You say that they are not reliable. but what if you have all your data on your computer and then use the memory stick (1GB) for back up only. So the chances of your computer failing and your memory stick failing is less.

I have 1gm to back up and only have a CD writer so would take ages backing up onto over 10Cds each time. I want to back up every month and can't be asked with loading 10 cds. I believe that Cds only store 80MB which would actually mean I would be loading 13 CDs each month!!

CDs usually store about 700-800Mb. You're a bit out in your calculations.:D

then an external Hard disk is a better option for you, there are options for recovering data from damaged hard disks and CDR's but a dead usb drive flash chip is dead , no way back

DVD.co.uk have a 1GB Kingston for £13.99 with free postage.

I think I'm going to pick up one of the 7dayshop ones though as they have faster read/write times.
