What's a flash pen drive when it's at home?

It looks a bit like a key you plug into the side of your computer. It acts as an extra storage both for saving files and to allow you to transfer them across to another computer with ease.

So what's the deal?

Amazon* is selling a 1GB flash drive for £11.49 which is a very competitive price.

There is delivery to add on top of £3.23, but if you spend a total of over £15 then it's free. So if you've other purchases you want costing more than £3.51 it's worth it.

Ut... hmmm.... I could also note that if you're stuck for something to add then m'book the Money Diet* is only £3.99 there! ;)

Thanks for this Martin, I had a £15 Amazon gift code from doing surveys to use up too. A real freebie for me!

Hi Martin, the pendrive is down to 11.49 this morning, but as its sold by a shop and not Amazon itself, you can't get free postage.

It really acts as extra storage (portable storage).......not memory.

Micro direct are selling a 4GB pendrive for £23.49 so compared to £12.99 for 1GB this has to be a better deal.

However, I have a 512MB pendrive that i use for work and have never yet reached capacity for normal office or laboratory use so I've decided that getting a bigger capacity drive isn't necessary for me.

It's only a bargain if you need it!

  • £10.49 from 7dayshop.com for 1 gig USB flash drive
    at http://www.7dayshop.com/

or £17.99 for a 2 gig from the same shop
    - I buy my camera memory cards & rechargable batteries
from them because their prices are better than eBuyer & Micro-direct
& if you buy less than £18 at a time you don't pay VAT on your purchase
    - definitely worth a look :D

Though, given the size of the thing, it looks like it may contain a 1" hard drive rather than flash memory.

You're right, my mistake, I didn't look at the specifications, it's based on microdrive technology. That's a new one for me I didn't know that stuff was available as a pen drive.

Oh well, i't still cheap but not as reliable or robust as solid state I guess.
